Chapter 56: An impossible recovery

Damon firmly held Mark as he tried to listen to what was going on inside the room. Everything was messy and chaotic. They were all saying different things. He tried to listen past the shuffling feet, panicked voices, and monitor alarms.

No—there was no code blue. No flatline. Her heartbeat was still there. Rapid, erratic—but there.

Through the thin barrier, he heard one nurse gasp, "Her vitals just spiked—what the hell—her EEG is going crazy!"

A different voice—likely a doctor’s—spoke in disbelief. "This doesn’t make sense. Neural activity is returning. Get me the neurologist, now! And bring me her surgeon. He needs to see this."

Damon’s heart raced. Did it work after all? She is improving. She is healing. This is good. He was counting on it. Even if his blood did not transform her into a vampire, it should still possess enough blood energy to heal her injuries.

However, he suddenly froze. A thought popped into his head. What if it worked too well? What if she actually turned into a vampire in the real life just like him? What if his blood energy was simply too potent?

He was only hoping for the healing effect of vampiric blood in general but when a strong vampire gives blood, it does turn the recipient into one. What if his primordial bloodline was enough to overcome the race evolution restriction? What if Kate woke up like him feeling blood thirsty and killed everyone in that room?

Until now, he had been worried about his blood not working, and now that she showed signs of improvement, so many worst-case scenarios popped into his mind.

His hands tightened around Mark’s shoulders instinctively. His mind raced, playing through scenarios like a combat simulation.

Kate had ingested his blood. A lot of it. What if she didn’t awaken gently? What if the primal instincts hit first—hunger, confusion, rage? She would feast on everyone around her. Even if he intervened, everyone would see who she was or what she has become.

Hospital security would rush to the crime scene. Cameras would record everything. Police would be involved. The government would be involved. No matter where they went, they would be hunted down like dogs.

Did he have enough strength and power to stand up against the government?

Fuck. It wouldn’t be just the Canadian government, every single political power in the world would hunt him down to get their hands on his power. Everything would become instantly complicated. If he left right now...

No. Damon squished the thought as soon as it popped into his brain.

Just because things became difficult, he wouldn’t leave his friend and his friend’s sister to fend for themselves. If he did this what would be the difference between him and that bastard who backstabbed him?

The truth was he had already made his choice the moment he let that first drop of blood touch her lips. There was no taking it back now. He had to deal with the fallback one way or the other. He knew this and did it anyways.

What else was he supposed to do? Watch Mark and Kate fall apart right in front of him?

No. He did not doubt his decision. He did not regret his actions. Whatever came next he will deal with it.

Damon released Mark’s shoulders, jaw clenched, forcing himself to breathe slowly. Panic would only make things worse. If Kate had truly awakened as a vampire, she’d need guidance. She did not have to deal with any of it on her own. He was there to take care of them both.

When he needed someone the most Mark was there for him and now when his friend needed him the most, he would be there for them.

What about shadowstep? He could use shadowstep to teleport the three of them out of here. But wait, would shadowstep even work like that? Could he take someone else with him?

Damon remembered he had snagged a Blink skill from one of the mages during the monkey event. Could he maybe use that? But Blink required mana. His blood energy could provide that for him.

He needed to work this out. Damon clenched his fists as determination filled his eyes. No matter what happened, he was not going to desert either of them.

Damon prepared for the worst, but the commotion inside the room seemed to be fizzling down. Ready to burst into the damn door at any moment now, he carefully paid attention to the conversation.

The door opened and a nurse came out to call Mark inside. "Sorry only family allowed at this time." She closed the door behind them.

Damon nodded, still senses still glued onto the room. He didn’t pace. He didn’t twitch. He stood rooted, spine straight, every muscle coiled and ready like a blade half-drawn from its sheath.

Inside, Kate’s vitals had stabilized. Heartbeat strong. Breathing even. The doctors weren’t shouting anymore, just murmuring in disbelief, cycling through diagnostics, probably questioning whether they’d misread the charts.

Damon caught one line clear as day: "We need to run full imaging. This recovery isn’t just unusual—it’s impossible."

He heard Mark choke out a sob—then another, this one lighter. "She squeezed my hand," he whispered.

Damon’s chest loosened slightly. The doctors essentially said that she was still in a semi-coma state and might need several days to recover from that condition.

But her brain activity is no longer considered non-existent. She had a really good activity, even comparable to that of the healthy brain. They even removed all the equipment connected to her body one by one. She no longer needed any ventilator or IV support.

Her vitals were regulating on their own, as though her body had remembered how to breathe again, how to live again. She was stabilizing more and more. At this point it looked like she was basically taking a nap.

Damon then suddenly barged into the room. "Can we take her home and wait for her recovery or does she have to stay here?"
