Chapter 33: What must be done

In the book, the Scar made a name for themselves by stealing the key, which they used to attack the Empire's capital, but they did something even more notorious.

They triggered a Great Dungeon right in the Academy, in the Field Zone.

Unclear Dungeons will collapse and spew out monsters, but they usually have a time limit set to be cleared before such things happen.

A Great Dungeon, on the other hand, won't last a week before it needs to be cleared. But what makes it even more dangerous is the monsters inside; they don't follow the rank of the dungeon.

Dungeons are ranked from E to S. Each rank has low and high.

So a Great Dungeon might be an E rank on the outside but have S rank monsters on the inside.

In the book, the Great Dungeon that was triggered was a setup to let the main character power up as he watched his friends nearly beaten to death.

"Just watch," Severin said with narrowed eyes.

It didn't take long for a portal to appear, and two people came out. One of them was a man that limped out, and the other was the woman that nearly killed Severin.

"They chose this place because the security here was less, and frankly, because the Academy didn't put much thought into the Class Five."

Their portal took them beside the small security office by the gate, and with a gesture from the woman, a purple light flashed in a horizontal slash that severed the building and its occupants into two.

"Shouldn't we do anything?" Ethan asked, gripping his hammer tightly with his hands.

Severin didn't bother to reply, and Derrick was too stunned by what was happening to do anything stupid.

"They are suppressing their aura as much as they could."

The woman stared at the dorms with angry eyes, and then she spread her hands as if she wanted to embrace something. Her eyes were narrowed in concentration, and before long, blood began to trickle from her nose.

"What... is she doing?" Derrick asked.

No one answered. They could feel a chill in the air, and they held their breath in anticipation. Something was coming, something strong.

The air seemed stiff, as if the wind had turned solid.

They didn't have to wait long before a portal spread beneath the dorms—a portal big enough to swallow it whole. And that was what happened. The dorms were swallowed, together with their occupants.

All of them, in one go.

And in the next instant, the man and the woman were gone.

Leaving nothing behind but an empty compound filled with abandoned buildings. All those students, gone.

"We are leaving now," Severin said. His voice was like cold iron, and the two students, numb from shock, obeyed as if grateful for having something to do.

They returned to their own class dorm before anyone discovered the incident.

Derrick was the most shaken because he could easily see himself in the dorm that was swallowed like a tide. Just like that, his life would have ended.

"We... we are supposed to be Heroes. Severin, what have you done?" Ethan asked. He had seen acts of cruelty. He'd committed it himself. Hell, he'd killed and stomped on people.

But that.

That was small in comparison to what Severin just did.

Yes, Severin... he could... he could have done something!

Severin raised his brows. "We are Heroes? That's ironic coming from you, Ethan."

Ethan flushed. "It's not the same thing. You could have done something—anything! Maybe report to the Academy or..."

"And what would have happened then? They will hold me for having such information, right? My life is far too important than anything else," Severin said calmly.

Why had he worked so hard to get out of Class Five? It was exactly for that reason. Sure, he could try not to sleep in the dorm when it happened, but that would only draw suspicion to him. And then what? He'd end up the same.

Everything he did was to rise from the bottom in the cruel world that the author created. He didn't know why and how he was here, but he was. And he would do anything to rise to the top and see the bastard that sent him there in the first place.

But first, he must rise. And that means accepting that he wasn't above cruel things himself. He would do what he had to do for his interest.

Ethan scowled and sneered. "Then why did you bring me along? To take the fall together with you?"

Severin blinked. "Maybe I want to show you what you will be dealing with later."

Ethan shook his head and stormed out of the room, slamming the door with more force than necessary.

Derrick was looking at Severin with a complicated expression. "If I was in the dorm... would you have let me die like that?"

Severin met his eyes. "If you hadn't made yourself useful, then yes, you'd be like them."

Derrick stood up. "You... I thought you were just a bigger bully. But you're just a twisted bastard. You should get strong, Severin, because I'm sure you will make a lot of enemies. And you won't always have meat shields."

"Is this a threat?"

But Derrick didn't answer. He was already gone.

Severin sat alone for a while, and then he went to the bathroom to wash his face.

His hands trembled a bit.

He stared at himself in the mirror—eyes that were blue and cold. An unfamiliar face, yet a face he was now so used to. "What a complicated shit."

"Do I bring them along so it'll go easier? Well, I'll still do this again if I have to."

Accepting that he would do anything to keep himself alive and strong still doesn't make it easy to accept the consequences.

But what else could he do?

Everything that he has done since he got to the damned world was a setup for the Great Dungeon.

In fact, the Great Dungeon was created to make a number of characters more powerful.

Eric included. And that was why he took his artifact.

He could not let the Great Dungeon not be created. He needed it, and a lot of people had to die to make it happen.

He accepted that.

But still, his hands trembled.
