Chapter 209: Not her

Fil had always been known as an early bird in the office, but ever since she came back, she wanted to come earlier than used to. She would only be in the office for a week. Therefore, she wanted to give more than a hundred percent by showing up early and getting more work done.

In other words, she was already early today, but Elise was earlier.

"Good morning," Fil greeted as she sat down, earning a short smile from Elise. "I thought you were early the other day because you were excited to see me, but you’re early today too."

"Just... I have a lot of work to do." Elise smacked her lips. "I’m swamped. I’ve offered to help Olivia with her other clients on top of the Solana." fгeewebnovёl.com

"Oh. I didn’t know that. Do you need help?"

"It’s alright. I can... do it. Thanks."

Fil watched Elise try to busy herself in her cubicle. She glanced at the papers on Elise’s desk and then at the latter’s monitor. There were times Elise was early at work, but she was usually just idling or gossiping. Not that she was a bad employee since she still got the job done.

’Did he break up with her?’ wondered Fil, recalling her fight with Marcus the day before. ’I did hint to him that he should break up with Elise first to show his sincerity.’

Fil opened and closed her mouth, but her voice was stuck in her throat. She wanted to talk to Elise, but Elise gave off this distant vibe.

’Never mind.’ She looked away and placed her phone on the side of her desk. ’It’s not like I didn’t expect this when Ken told me she saw Marcus and I.’

With that thought in mind, Fil didn’t bother Elise and gave the young lady the space she needed at the moment. Trying hard to bond with her would only make her look even more guilty.

Soon enough, the employees slowly arrived, one after another until the office was packed. Yet, Fil and Elise didn’t talk to each other and kept their focus on their work.

’This is bothersome,’ Fil thought, sneaking up a glance at Elise. ’It’s not like this is the first time we got busy with work. But she usually takes breaks and forces me to take a break with her.’

Fil had her eyes on the monitor, but her mind was drifting elsewhere. But before she could entertain any negativity, a sudden noise interrupted her.

"Yo!"

"Ah, crap!" Fil jolted from her seat when Kenzo suddenly turned up in front of her cubicle. "Kenzo!"

Kenzo frowned. "Why are you so jumpy?"

"Why did you suddenly turn up like that?" Fil huffed, still feeling her heart racing. "You almost gave me a heart attack."

"Uhh... I always turn up to your desk like this, but you never got that surprised."

"Never mind." She shook her head. "What do you want?"

"Huh?"

"Ken, I don’t have time to gossip. I’m swamped with work — can’t you see? So, tell me what you need. Otherwise, I’ll ignore you."

Kenzo tapped his wristwatch and said, "We’re doing a site visit today. Did you forget?"

"A site visit?" she murmured, her eyes dilating upon realization. "Right."

"Pack up your things. We need to be there. The supplies will be there too and we need to check those as well."

"Uh, wait. Gosh. How can I forget such an important thing?"

For a moment, Fil quickly cleaned up her desk and hurriedly grabbed her purse. Kenzo could only shake his head while watching her scramble around her desk.

"Tsk tsk. Don’t forget the documents," he reminded, only to receive a dead look from her.

"Got them right here." she handed him the printouts as they walked away.

While Fil and Kenzo were chatting as they walked away, Elise turned her head in their direction. A dejected sigh escaped her, burying her face in her palms.

’What am I doing?’ she wondered to herself. ’Just the other day, I was crying because I miss her. But now, I’m pretending she’s not here.’

If there weren’t any conflict, Elise would’ve fought Kenzo to go with Fil. Or perhaps she would squeeze herself to join them. It might be work, but for sure, it would be a nice road trip with friends as well. But alas, she got so upset yesterday.

’Also, I should ask her about why she was with Marcus yesterday,’ was what she told herself. ’Fil and Marcus were friends for a long time. Even before he dated me, they’d known each other. They’re like siblings!’

Elise sighed once more. ’I should’ve just asked her. Why didn’t I?’

Was it the fear that Fil would lie and that Elise would see through this lie? Or that Fil would tell her the truth and this truth was something she didn’t want to hear?

’Fil is so... pretty.’ Elise spread her fingers to look at the monitor. ’Even I would like her if I were a man. Unlike me, who... is just me. Ugh. What am I thinking? Fil won’t betray me like that! There must be a misunderstanding.’

Her eyes welled up, telling herself she should muster the courage to ask Fil once she returned. Or perhaps, give her a call. After all, she and Kenzo might not return to the office if they were doing some site visits today.

"I’ll just tell her that we need to talk." She nodded and quickly reached for her phone. Elise typed a short message, deleting and rewriting it a couple of times until she found the right words for the tone she wanted Fil to hear from a mere text.

"There you go..." Elise trailed off as he heard a vibration on the desk beside her. She slowly slid her chair to Fil’s desk, furrowing her brows as her eyes fell on Fil’s phone. "She left her phone."

Elise stared at it and her initial thought was to call Kenzo about it. Those two hadn’t gone far and they could still return. This was important, after all. However, as if luck was playing with her, the phone vibrated again.

She saw the name, making her heart stop for a second.

’He hadn’t been messaging me...’ was the first thought that crossed her mind, which she quickly got rid of. ’It’s probably some work... what work?’

Elise told herself many things, including why she shouldn’t let her curiosity get the best of her. This was not her. She would never invade anyone’s privacy. Yet, she found herself holding Fil’s phone with tears rolling down her cheeks.
