The Devil's Good Girl-Chapter 211: Stranger
Chapter 211: Stranger
"Ken, watch out!"
The tires screeched as Kenzo intuitively hit the brakes. Their hearts stopped momentarily as their bodies followed the sudden force.
Thud.
"Hah..." Fil breathed out a jagged breath, lifting her eyes to the windshield. Kenzo also raised his dilated eyes, mindlessly unbuckling his seat.
"Oh, no," he muttered, jumping out of the driver’s seat to check the person they hit. Fil also hopped out and as soon as she did, her eyes fell on the person lying on the ground.
"Oh, no."
"Mister!" Kenzo rushed to the person, squatting down to check up on him. Sweats instantly formed on his forehead and back, thinking this wouldn’t end up well if this person died.
Fil stood frozen on the spot, watching Kenzo check the person they crashed into. Although they were driving slowly because of the red light and Kenzo timely hit the brakes, she heard the thud when they crashed into him.
It sounded so traumatizing.
"Is he... dead?" she blurted out in fear, only for her breath to hitch when she heard a grunt.
"Ugh..." the man moaned in pain, his eyes slowly cracked open.
"Mister!" Kenzo yelled. "Are you okay?"
The man groggily looked at the man’s face hovering over him. Kenzo’s voice sounded distant to him, his eyes rolling.
"Hospital —" Kenzo muttered in panic, turning to Fil. "Fil, call an ambulance — no. Help me. We’ll take him there!"
"But what if he has injuries?" Fil replied in the same manner as his. "I’ll call for an ambulance."
Kenzo clenched his teeth, but she had a point. If the man’s injuries were much graver than they thought, moving him themselves might only aggravate his condition. However, just as he quietly agreed to Fil, the man suddenly grabbed his arm.
"No," said the man with great difficulty. "Don’t."
"Huh?"
Fil, who was dialing the emergency hotline, paused as she gazed at the man. ’What did he say?’
"No, hospital." The man grunted, propping his elbow against the concrete as he sat upright. "I’m fine."
"You..." Kenzo assessed the man up and down. "Mister, but..."
Kenzo trailed off, looking at the man with shaking eyes. The man was pale as if he was at the last thread of his life. It was the reason he panicked, but now that he was looking at him closely, he didn’t seem to have inflicted any injury.
"But we still need to be sure," he blurted out as that was the only natural thing to do. "We can’t just —"
This time, his remarks halted as his breath hitched when the stranger’s pair of topaz eyes met his. The stranger might look pale, but his eyes shone so brightly, like the sun. It was strange, but Kenzo found himself in a trance at the sight of it.
"I’m alright," said the stranger and his tone sounded even more firm. There was still a trace of pain in his voice, but not just as much as a few seconds ago. "Though, would you tell me what year is it?"
"What?" Kenzo snapped back to the current lapse, panicking again. "Did you forget — no, I’ll take you to the hospital."
The stranger just blinked. No one could tell what he was thinking.
"Year," he repeated plainly. "What year is it?"
Kenzo looked back at the man. "It’s the year 2021."
"2021..." the man muttered as he slid his eyes down. "I see."
The stranger planted his hand on the concrete, pushing himself to stand up. Kenzo also stood, his hands ready to catch the man if he fell. But alas, the man looked very much fine.
Without a word, the man turned on his back and started dragging himself away.
"Uh... mister?" Kenzo called, confused. "Where are you — we need to take you to the hospital!"
The stranger didn’t answer, making Kenzo furrow his brows. Kenzo looked back at Fil, who was staring back at them with confusion. At the same time, the representative on the other end of the line spoke.
"Freeman General Hospital. What is your emergency?" fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com
Fil opened and closed her mouth, holding the phone in her ear. "False alarm, sorry," she muttered and immediately hung up.
What was that?
Just now, they heard a thud, indicating they hit that man who showed up in front of their car out of nowhere. Now, that same stranger was avoiding help.
’That’s weird,’ Fil thought, shrugging at Kenzo.
Fil and Kenzo slowly shifted their eyes in the stranger’s direction, only to see the man stopped in his tracks. Their brows elevated as the stranger slowly looked back, his eyes landing in Fil’s direction.
Deep lines appeared between their brows as the man walked back in their direction. She instinctively took a step back upon realizing the weird stranger was headed in her vantage point.
"Hey —" Kenzo jumped to the man as the latter stood a step from Fil.
"Uhm..." Fil pursed her lips, holding the phone closer to her chest, eyes on him. She didn’t know why, but she felt like she had seen those same eyes before. Was it because they reminded her of Jackson? He had the same eye color.
"Are you... okay?" she asked hesitatingly. "Why are you — why are you looking at me like that? I wasn’t the one driving."
It was stupid, but Kenzo couldn’t believe what he just heard. It sounded like she had just thrown him under the bus. But the stranger didn’t say anything and simply stared at her quietly.
"Is there something wrong?" she asked awkwardly. "We can still take you to the emergency to make sure you are fine."
The man batted his long eyelashes ever so slowly before the corner of his mouth hooked up into a smile. Seeing the look on his face, Fil felt like her heart briefly clenched.
Meanwhile, Kenzo darted his eyes between Fil and the stranger, unsure of how this situation was heading. But before he could think of anything else, he noticed the car’s bumper. Turning his head, his brows knitted together upon catching the big dent in the front of their car.
"What the —" he moved closer, checking the bumper, and then shifted his eyes to the man. ’Is this dent had always been here or was this car actually that brittle?’ Because if the answer was neither of those, then there was no way that man could still be walking fine.
