The Devil's Good Girl-Chapter 236: A scare
Chapter 236: A scare
Fil had always suspected that Michael was more than meets the eye. However, she didn’t expect that what more than meets the eye was something so heavy.
Everything he said made her reflect on herself. She didn’t even know how she parted with him or got herself a cab to go home. It was as though time had just slipped past her and now, she was just walking herself back home.
[I’m too deep into this.]
[You remind me of her.]
[I can’t abandon her again.]
"How insensitive of me to say that to him," she murmured, now realizing how insensitive she must’ve sounded when she told him to let things go. "If I were in his shoes..."
Fil pressed her lips into a thin line, kicking a pebble in her path. Thinking that what happened to Alicia would happen to Elijah, she would probably do everything in her power to get justice for him. After all, her anger, when she found out who beat up Kenzo, was something she couldn’t describe until now.
’If Jack didn’t come into my life... I can see myself helping Michael,’ she thought. ’But I don’t want to put myself in that kind of situation anymore. I don’t want to put my loved ones in a difficult situation.’
Was she worried about Michael? Of course. Even though they’re only good time together was when he helped her in crucial times, he somehow grew on her.
’Once I leave, he’ll start on his plan.’ Another thought came across her mind. ’Whatever his plans were, I’m scared for him.’
Considering Marcus, Vincent, and Shanaiah’s families, Michael’s power wasn’t enough. Michael knew that since it wouldn’t have taken this long for him to act on his plan.
Knowing what was coming was like a weight she was carrying. She knew how messy things would be, but she also knew she shouldn’t meddle with it. It’s none of her concern anymore. She was out of this and it should continue that way.
As Fil dragged herself home, her steps slowed down upon sensing someone’s gaze on her. She snapped her eyes ahead, her languid steps turning into casual hurried ones.
’Is someone behind me?’ she instinctively clasped her purse and felt the small device in her other hand. Her eyes lit up upon realizing she had been holding onto Michael’s gift instead of tucking it away.
Fil kept herself composed, trying to sense if the presence behind her was still present. When she realized it was gone, she slowed down and gazed down.
’No shadow,’ she told herself, maintaining her pace as she glanced over her shoulder. ’There’s no one? Was it just my imagination?’
This time, she stopped and looked back completely. A deep sigh of relief escaped her, almost patting her chest. No one was following her.
"Right. I’ve been living around this neighborhood for years now and even walked this same street in the middle of the night." She couldn’t help but laugh at herself, shaking her head as she turned around. "How could I —"
"Boo!"
"Ah!" Out of instinct, Fil raised her fist and did a straight jab at the person in front of her. She flinched when the person fell back on his bottom, hearing him whimper in pain.
"Ah... My nose — aw!"
Confused, her shaky eyes slowly gazed down at the person on the ground. She blinked and blinked, only to furrow her brows as soon as she recognized him.
"Eli?!" she gasped, watching her little brother rub his nose. "Oh my god, Eli! I didn’t know it was — why would you come up to me like that?!"
Worry and annoyance mixed with her voice, confused about which dominated her more. She squatted to his side, sighing and clicking her tongue at the same time.
"Sis, do you always punch people like that? I think you broke my nose!" Elijah complained.
"Yes, I do, Eli! So, don’t ever approach someone like that in the middle of the night in an empty street!" she harrumphed, still feeling her heart race at the little scare he gave her. "My goodness. Let me see. Did I really break your nose?"
Elijah let out a short whimper, letting his big sister check on his injury. The tip of his nose looked red, and he could feel it throb.
"Gosh. I don’t think it’s broken," she heaved a sigh of relief. "Though it might need a cold compress."
"Sis, you are a brute!"
Her worried expression immediately shifted in dismay. Fil slapped his shoulder, clicking her tongue.
"Don’t do that again!" she repeated in a hiss. "If it’s someone other than me, you might get in trouble!"
"I don’t come up to other people like that," he murmured. "Come on. Help me up. I don’t plan to stay on the ground forever."
"Gosh." Fil felt the need to snap her tongue again before helping her brother up.
Elijah still dramatically held his nose, looking at her as if she had wronged him. Fil, on the other hand, looked back at him with equal dismay and worry. She still helped him, though.
"What are you doing here, by the way?" she asked as they walked to her place. "You didn’t tell me you’d come by."
"I told you the other day, didn’t I?"
"You did...?" Fil glanced up as she pondered, only to remember the brief phone call she had with him a few days prior. "Oh, right? Sorry. I got caught up with some things. It slipped my mind."
Elijah wanted to complain, but for some reason, he held back. "Is everything okay?"
"Hmm?"
"You always take a walk when you are thinking of something," he pointed out. "Did you and my brother break up?"
"No." Her lips curved down. "It’s not him, but something else. It’s work!"
Fil offered her little brother a smile, trying not to make him worry. With that, the two of them chatted as they headed to her place.
Little did Fil know, from the end of the street behind them, a tall figure stood in the dark. His pair of topaz eyes shone, keeping them on her figure, and then shifted his gaze slowly to the young man with her.
