The Devil's Good Girl-Chapter 239: The smell of omen
Chapter 239: The smell of omen
Fil and Elijah enjoyed their snacks in the living room. Jackson stared at the pair from the kitchen, smiling subtly. His smile, however, was short-lived at the thought in his mind.
"Here." Jackson returned to the living area, putting down a bowl of popcorn on the table. "You guys start the movie. I forgot that I needed to make a phone call."
Fil and Elijah looked at him curiously.
"Sure." Fil smiled, not asking anything since she knew he had plenty of things to do. "But we’ll wait for you."
"It’s not a movie night if we don’t wait for you," Elijah added. "Take your time, bro. Don’t worry about us."
Jackson smiled slightly and nodded in understanding.
When he left, Elijah turned to his sister.
"Sis, is he alright?" he asked. "My brother seems a little off since you guys came home."
"Well, I think it’s my fault."
"Huh?"
Fil sighed. "Jack got a little worried earlier, so he ran to me as fast as he could and left his car in the traffic. Although it’s not that far, he looked really... alarmed. Maybe a little scared?"
"Gosh. Why do you always worry people?" Elijah frowned. "No wonder he looked a little pale. I thought he’s sick."
"It’s not like I meant to worry him." Fil snapped her eyes at the front door where Jackson went. "But he’ll be fine. Anyway, why don’t you stay in my apartment? Jack and I would be busy with the wedding preparations. We also have multiple business trips this month and the next."
"Well, this place is also only 30 minutes away from the university." Elijah hummed while rubbing his chin. "Wait. Do you plan to keep this place even when you’re away for a year?"
Fil nodded.
"But why?" Deep lines resurfaced on his forehead. "Isn’t that a waste of money? If you’re keeping it because of me, I can just find a bed space. It’s cheaper. Or maybe I’ll stay in the dormitory."
"All my things are here and I find it a hassle to move them to another place. This place is also cheap, you know? Moreover, I might need to come by the office now and then. So, it’s better if I already have a place to stay."
"Well, if you put it like that... okay?" Elijah grinned. "Then, I’ll stay here."
For Elijah, this was a great favor to him. At least, his parents didn’t have to pay for his accommodation. Although the school would sponsor fifty percent of Elijah’s tuition, half of it was still worth full tuition in other schools. A free lodging was a great financial help for their parents.
"Sis, how about the utilities?" Elijah’s eyes glimmered. "Will you pay for it too?"
"If Mom and Dad allow it, I will pay for your tuition too. But they always tell me sending you to school is their responsibility," she complained. "So, don’t worry about your lodging and all the utilities here. All I ask of you is you study well. Do you understand?"
"Of course!" he grinned. "Having a place all for myself at this age sounds like I am a young master! My independent era is starting well."
Fil chuckled helplessly at her brother. When she was in college, the only reason Fil was able to attend a prestigious university was because of a full scholarship. But that didn’t mean she didn’t have to work part-time secretly to not burden her parents so much.
She didn’t want Elijah to experience the hardships she went through.
While the two engaged in conversation, Jackson stood outside the apartment with the phone in his ear.
"Yes," he said under his breath while pinching the bridge of his nose. "Quentin is just around Fil’s place. Send everyone to find him. If he could conceal himself, then that means he woke up in a right state of mind."
"Already on it."
Jackson ended the call as soon as he heard his henchman’s reply. He then dialed another number, knowing searching for Quentin wasn’t enough.
"It’s me," he said as soon as the line connected. "Did you hear already?"
"Just now." On the other end of the line was Kim. "Are you sure Quentin found her?"
"Yes. She saw him earlier."
Kim didn’t speak for a moment. "Are you sure, Jack?"
Jackson couldn’t blame the doubt in Kim’s voice. If Quentin found Fil, then Quentin wouldn’t have left Fil unscathed. But nothing happened... yet.
"Kim." Jackson snapped his sharp eyes open, his jaw tightening. "I wouldn’t deploy my people to search the area if I am not sure."
"Then what do you want me to do?"
"Fil and I will fly out in a couple of days. I want you to stay around just in case he appears again."
Kim nodded. "Fine."
"And give Chris a heads up," he remarked. "We don’t know what’s going on in Quentin’s mind this time, but what I’m sure of is that he’ll come after him one way or another."
"I don’t need to. Chris’s the one who told me about the situation," she explained. "He’s been on the edge when he heard Quentin went missing. He’s been locking himself in his workshop for safety."
"I see."
"Jack," Kim called before he hung up on her. "If I see him... I’ll kill him even if you ask — beg me not to."
Having said that, the call ended. That was the last call he made. Sighing, he marched toward the railing and rested his hand on it.
"Quentin..." he murmured, gazing out into the darkness. He gripped the railing tightly with all the thoughts in his head.
There was a reason everyone was worried about Quentin’s disappearance and waking up from his long slumber. However, Jackson’s only worry about this was Fil. In this lifetime, Fil and Jackson were heading to a happily ever after. They finally lived in a lifetime where they could live together and love each other freely.
Jackson didn’t want to risk that. His grip trembled as he closed his eyes, telling himself to stay calm.
Suddenly, he felt a pair of arms wrap around him from behind.
"Everything okay, Jack?"
Jackson looked back, only to see Fil smiling so beautifully at him. The thousands of thoughts swirling in his mind immediately disappeared and the turmoil in his heart ceased.
"Yeah," he whispered with a smile, turning around to face her. He tucked a portion of her hair behind her ear, nodding at her. "Everything’s okay now... somehow."
Fil studied his face and then smiled widely. "If you say so."
"Sweetheart, about that man... Quentin, if he approached you again, tell me."
"Do you know him?"
"No, but you said he’s weird and makes you uncomfortable."
"You weren’t like this when I was dealing with Marcus and Vincent," Fil joked but didn’t think much about it. "Fine. It’s not like I am expecting to see him again. He’s a weird man who had short-term amnesia. But sure. I’ll tell you."
Relief washed over his face as he pulled her into his embrace. She was his calm and source of strength... even though the very person who put this curse upon him was her.
