Chapter 238: Where’s your car

Kenzo’s lips pressed into a thin line. "I didn’t say a word when she’s engaged with a scum like Vincent Hale. But now that I know she’s with a man who sounds like a decent man, I don’t want to trouble her."

"We’ve been friends for a long time. And in her eyes, I am that male friend who never tries to be anything else," he added quietly. "I’d rather keep it that way than burden her with feelings that shouldn’t have existed. Especially when she’s free from all the feelings of those lunatics of her friends."

"I’m just saying." Olivia shrugged. "If you think you won’t regret it in the future, then do what you think is right."

Regret?

Kenzo had always regretted doing the subtle wooing back in college. He used to leave love letters and gifts in her locker back in college. Although he knew his words of admiration toward Fil flattered her, he knew it wasn’t enough for her to reconsider with Vincent in the picture. Therefore, Kenzo told himself he would confess once he found an opening.

He never found the opening. Or rather, their friendship became so strong that he was afraid his romantic feelings would get in the way. Before he knew it, here he was, still standing at a safe distance while rooting for her from behind the scenes.

"At this point, all I wish is that whoever this man she’s with would love her the way she deserved to be loved," he expressed sincerely with a tinge of sadness. "Because if not, I might as well take the risk." — or not.

Olivia assessed his side profile and couldn’t help but shake her head. She set her eyes on the windshield, sighing faintly.

"You’re just like your brother," she said. "Both stubborn to the point it’s irritating."

Meanwhile, Fil stood in the same spot even after Olivia’s car was out of sight. Her phone rang and she answered it.

"Where are you?" she asked with a smile.

"On the way," Jackson replied. "There’s just traffic, but I’ll be there soon."

His voice was laced with irritation and impatience, making her chuckle.

"Don’t worry," she reassured. "Just drive safely, okay? I won’t disappear from here. Besides, I told you that we might stay longer. I didn’t expect that everyone is such a... lightweight."

Fil trailed off as she slowly gazed up. Deep lines appeared between her brows, squinting at the figure standing across the street. She couldn’t see the person’s face properly because of the lack of light, but she could feel the person was staring at her.

"Sweetheart, is everything alright?" asked Jackson as the line suddenly fell into silence.

Fil didn’t respond despite hearing Jackson’s query. She watched the figure slink out of the shadows, furrowing her brows as she assessed him from head to toe.

"Is that... Quentin?" she whispered, feeling this sense of dread creeping up her spine as Quentin stood motionless with his eyes fixed on her. "What is he doing here?"

The second Jackson heard Quentin’s name from her lips, his eyes glinted in panic.

He found her.

Jackson gazed at the traffic ahead before he decided to get out and ran to her as fast as he could. If Quentin found Fil, then that meant... she would be in danger. All the previous lifetimes came surging back to him, making his heart race.

’I can’t let it end like that again.’

Myriads of thoughts hovered over Jackson’s mind. One of the thoughts that crossed his mind was: how did Fil know about Quentin? She didn’t mention it to him.

"Fil!" Jackson halted several steps from Fil, catching the vacant look in her eyes while she was staring across the street. Looking at the direction she was staring at, he furrowed his brows. There was no one in there. ƒrēenovelkiss.com

He snapped his eyes back to Fil before he approached her.

"Sweetheart?" he called, his hair was a little messy from all the running. He ran as fast as he could, and to be fair, it only took him around three minutes to reach her. It was faster than if he was using a car.

"Fil?" Jackson furrowed his brows before he carefully touched her arm.

Fil flinched and when she blinked, life returned in her eyes. She turned and faced him, furrowing her brows.

"Jack?" she called with a bit of surprise. "You’re here?"

"What happened?" he asked, assessing her from her to toe.

"Hmm?" she cocked her head to the side. "What do you mean?"

"You were zoning out just now. Did something happen?"

"I was?" Fil scratched her temple with her index, a little confused. She didn’t feel like she was zoning out just now. "That’s weird."

"Hmm?"

She flashed him a smile and shook her head. "It’s nothing. Anyway, I thought you were stuck in traffic."

Jackson didn’t respond as he kept studying her. By the looks of it, Fil seemed to be fine. There wasn’t any lingering scent to her. After he was sure she was fine, Jackson heaved a sigh of relief. Without a word, he slowly took a step to her and embraced her mildly.

"Huh?" Surprise shone in her eyes as he suddenly buried his face on her shoulder with his arm wrapped around her. "Is everything okay, Jack? You seem a little... off?"

"I’m fine," he breathed out. "I was just a little worried."

"Goodness." She chuckled, patting his back. "What? Did you think I will get kidnapped?"

Kidnapped? He thought worst.

Jackson pulled her tightly in his arms before he carefully released her. Looking down at her, he cupped her face and smiled.

"Fil, just now, you mentioned a name," he said.

"I did?" she blinked and pondered. "Ah. You mean Quentin?"

He arched a brow. ’So I wasn’t mistaken?’

"He’s the guy Kenzo hit the other day," she explained. "I mentioned to you about the mild car accident a few days ago, right? "

Fil hummed as she looked across the street. "I thought I saw him just now. But I think I was just seeing things." She frowned as she looked back at him. "Anyway, should we go home?"

"Uh."

"Hmm? Is there something wrong?" she wondered, only to notice Jackson’s car was out of sight. "Eh? Where’s your car?"

Jackson cleared his throat as he recomposed himself. "I left it."

"Huh?"

"I thought you were in danger, so I ran." He smiled.

"You... ran?" Fil was puzzled. "If you did, then how come you got in here so quickly?"

Now, Jackson realized he didn’t prepare a proper answer if this question arose. But instead of thinking of a lie, he just smiled brightly and said;

"I told you, didn’t I? I’m not human anymore."
