Chapter 246: Too young for her

Kim stayed with Fil, helping her pack her things. Fil had bought a lot, and she didn’t realize that until now. When they were done, both of them were exhausted. Thus, they rewarded themselves with some snacks and a glass of wine.

"So, what time will Jack come home?" Kim sat leisurely on the couch while Fil just sat down with some new snacks. "It’s getting late."

Fil checked the time, and it was past eight in the evening.

"He said he’ll come home a little late tonight, but he’s probably on his way," she said with brief curiosity in her eyes. "Why are you suddenly asking about him?"

"I don’t want to see his ugly face." Kim rolled her eyes. "I’m still bitter that you’re going to marry him."

Fil laughed. "Don’t say that in front of him or he’ll send you away before the priest can ask who’s against the wedding."

"Nah. He knew I would not ruin your day just because I didn’t like him." Kim sighed as she took another sip from her glass.

Watching the beautiful Kim Rock, who used to appear so out of reach, Fil couldn’t help but smile. Back then, she felt intimidated by Kim and Dustin, considering their fame and their status in the upper echelon. But the more she spent time with them, the more Fil realized they were just like any other people she interacted with.

If anything, their status didn’t seem to matter to them that much.

"Kim, I don’t think I ever asked this before, but why do you hate him so much?" Fil asked out of pure curiosity. This had been a mystery to her. "Although it’s not hate-hate, but why?"

Kim raised an eyebrow at the question. "You took quite some time to ask that question, huh?"

"Well, I didn’t want to look like I was prying." Fil shrugged. "I just thought it’s not my place to ask and, to be honest, your relationship isn’t something that raises concern. You two look like siblings who fight like dogs and cats."

"Siblings?" Kim couldn’t help but laugh at the thought. "Not a chance. I’d rather be dead than accept he is my brother."

"So?" Fil’s eyes brimmed with curiosity. "Will you tell me?"

"It’s a long story and if I tell you, you’d just get confused."

Kim could just make up a believable story to tell her, but she didn’t want to lie to her. They already hide a lot of things from Fil, and adding more would only add to the weight on her shoulders.

"I have a lot of time," Fil reassured. "Did you have a relationship with him before?"

"What? Ew!" Kim gasped. "Fil, are you asking because you suspect that we’ve dated before?"

"No? And even if you did, I will understand."

"Ew," Kim repeated. If she could throw up, she would.

Kim made her disgust very clear that even a blind would see. Though Fil wasn’t relieved, she couldn’t help but frown. Jackson was still her fiance, and she felt the need to defend him.

"Jackson isn’t ew," Fil muttered. "He’s handsome, hot, and very nice."

That wasn’t why Kim felt disgusted at the idea, but she couldn’t just say Jackson was her soon-to-be stepfather, right?

’And even if he didn’t become her chosen one, he’s too young for me,’ Kim thought.

"It’s not like that, Fil," Kim sighed and shook her head. "It’s not because he’s ugly or anything like that. Although I don’t see the same allure you see in him, his face is decent."

"Then, why?"

"Because... he’s not my type." This wasn’t a lie, but a fraction of the truth. "I take it back. Just treat us like we’re siblings. You will never like your siblings romantically, right? It’s yuck."

Fil pondered about her little brother and nodded. "That’s, indeed, very yucky."

"Anyway..." Just as Kim was about to change the topic, they heard the mechanical sound of the front door unlocking. "Oh, Jack’s here."

Fil’s face instantly brightened up and perked up. The moment she saw Jackson coming in with a black briefcase, she grinned.

"Jack!" she jumped from her seat and excitedly went to him.

Seeing her approach, Jackson’s face softened. He bent over to plant a kiss on her lips, having a taste of the wine she had.

"You were drinking?" he asked, still not noticing Kim because all his focus was on his soon-to-be wife.

"Kim and I just finished packing."

"Kim?" Jackson lifted his eyes, only to catch Kim on the couch. "What is she doing here?"

"Helping me." Fil casually helped him with his coat and briefcase. "Did you eat already?"

"Mhm. I told you I’ll come home late. I had a dinner meeting with the board."

"Alright. I’ll take away these first."

Having said that, Fil quickly took the coat and the briefcase to their room, leaving Jackson to accompany Kim. Kim, on the other hand, followed Fil’s figure with her gaze.

"Fil surely trust you, huh?" she pointed out when she was out of sight, shifting her eyes to the approaching Jackson. "I thought because of her ex, she would find it hard to trust her next lover. Yet, here she was, leaving him all alone with another woman. I wonder if she truly loves you?"

"Say whatever you want, but I’m still marrying her." Jackson sat on the spot where Fil sat previously, loosening his tie as he cast his eyes on her. "How’s the search?"

"Still no trace of him, as if he just vanished into thin air."

"No one in the vicinity?" Jackson arched a brow. "I told you. I felt his presence some time ago near her workplace."

"We checked." Kim kept her radar on high alert in case Fil came back. "But I think I have an idea where he is."

Jackson squinted. "If you know, why are you still here?"

"Because I just found out, and I don’t want to leave her alone, unguarded." Kim shrugged while the confusion in Jackson’s eyes grew clearer. "When I came, Fil mentioned that her parents had a new neighbor."

Before Jackson could even hear the full story, he already had this strange feeling in his heart. "And?"

"His name is Quentin," she continued quietly. "I would’ve left that second, but I figured I have to talk to you about the next course of action."

Kim leaned forward a little as she stressed her next words. "She’ll never going to live again if he dies, Jack. I’m putting a stop to my mother’s suffering, and I hope since you’ve already had a chance to be together... you’ll be able to let her go."
