Chapter 251: Lingering heaviness

GASP!

Fil gasped for air, and at the same time, sat up on the bed. Sweats covered her forehead and back, her head throbbing.

"Fil."

Her eyes shook as Jackson’s voice assaulted her ear. She winced a little, gazing up at him with shaky eyes. Upon recognizing who it was, Fil leaped into his embrace.

Jackson intuitively hugged her back, glancing at her. He didn’t ask or say anything and simply stroked her back. Just now, she was sleeping soundlessly until she started mumbling again and then shouting before waking up.

"It’s okay," he cajoled. "It’s okay. I’m here, Fil."

Fil clasped his back, feeling her heart race. "I’m scared, Jack."

"I know," he whispered.

Fil buried her face in his shoulders as she tried to recall the vicious nightmare that woke her up. However, the more she tried to recall, the more blurry it became. Even so, the feelings the nightmare had left in her heart remained.

When she recovered, she slowly released Jackson.

His eyes brimmed with worry the moment their gaze met.

"What happened?" she asked, glancing at the very familiar room she woke up in. "Didn’t we have a plane to catch?"

"You don’t remember?"

Fil pressed her lips and looked at him. "Well..." she pondered, intuitively clasping her chest. "I remember feeling a sharp pain in my chest."

"And?"

"That’s all."

Jackson sighed. "You fainted, Fil."

"I did?"

"The doctors said it’s probably fatigue and stress for the upcoming wedding," he explained, using the doctor’s words. "They also said you will be fine if you rest."

"What about my parents?"

"I already gave them a call, but I didn’t tell them what happened to you. I told them I had an emergency and that we’re going to stay here for a couple of days."

Fil pressed her lips, staring at him apologetically. "I’m sorry."

"Why are you sorry?" he frowned. "It’s not like you wanted to faint."

"I feel sorry that you are forced to lie to my parents," she clarified weakly as she clasped his hand. "I know you don’t like lying to them, but you had to because you know they’d be worried about me."

Jackson smiled subtly, but he didn’t say anything. A sense of guilt, however, tugged his heart.

"It’s okay," he said as he reached for the glass of water on the bedside. "How are you feeling now?"

Fil took the glass and drank a mouthful. Only when she finished the entire glass did she realize she was thirstier than she thought.

"Fine," she answered awkwardly, holding the empty glass on her lap. "I think I had a dream."

Jackson was aware. "Do you... do you remember the dream?"

"No." She shook her head. "It’s a little foggy, but I remember the feeling."

Fil’s eyes softened as she gazed down. "I felt... pain, unimaginable pain that I was forced to live with every second I breathe. Pain that no physical harm could compare and then... longing."

The nightmare remained blurry in her head, but the feelings felt like they were her own. Even the heaviness lingered in her heart, almost making her want to cry.

Fil looked up at him again and sighed. "The doctors are probably right. I probably pushed myself too hard in the past weeks. I’m sorry for worrying you."

"Stop apologizing, Fil." Jackson carefully took the glass from her glass and assisted her down. Lifting the blanket over her chest, a short smile formed on his face. "It’s not your fault. So, why don’t you rest for now, hmm?"

"How about you?" she inquired. "Aren’t you going to sleep?"

"I still have some matters to settle."

Jackson brushed her hair with his fingertips, watching her close her eyes ever so slowly. She was still clasping the hem of the blanket tightly, forcing herself to rest. He waited patiently until he saw her grip loosen and relax.

Jackson sat upright, eyes still on her.

[No. Please, don’t kill her!]

Those were the words Fil shouted before she woke up from her nightmare. This confirmed Kim’s fate to him.

"I’m sorry," he whispered, planting a kiss on her knuckles. "I’m sorry."

His eyes brimmed with guilt, knowing Kim wouldn’t be there for Fil at their wedding. It may be shameful of him to still want to push through the wedding, but death... wasn’t a bad ending for creatures like them. If anything, it was the only rest they wanted.

However, that also didn’t mean Jackson would let Quentin off because of that. After all, this death was something Kim didn’t consent to.

Jackson stayed with Fil’s side until he was sure she was deep asleep. He then walked out of the bedroom and his eyes instantly caught Dustin in the living area. Dustin was standing in front of the floor-to-length wall.

"I’m sorry," Jackson remarked as soon as he stood beside him. "I didn’t think Quentin could stand a chance."

Dustin glanced at him with disappointment. But he didn’t say anything, casting his eyes on the city.

"There’s no point in blaming you when I’ve already blamed you all your life," he said quietly, his jaw tightening. "When our mother died, Kim and I wanted to follow her. However, she asked us to look after you. Do you know how much we’ve hated you because of that? Even if we want to join her, we cannot do so solely because we’re afraid she would only worry once she asked us about you."

Jackson lowered his gaze.

"But now that a life where we could be a part of her life rose, Kim couldn’t enjoy it to the very end," his voice cracked as he continued. "I can’t feel her heart anymore, Jack. I’m going to avenge her."

"No." Jackson’s answer was quick and stern.

"You sent Kim to stop him from approaching my mother." Dustin slowly faced him. "You sent her and didn’t say a word. How come you’re stopping me?"

"Even if she forgot who she is, Fil still sees her as a dear friend," Jackson reasoned. "You’re also an important friend to her, Dustin."

Bitterness swelled in Dustin’s heart. "Then, are you just planning to let him loose? You can’t leave her behind on her own."

"Quentin moved to her hometown." Jackson slowly balled his hands. "Fil and I will pick up her parents. Once I move them away, stay with them."

"You’re going to leave her?"

"You will stay with her," he remarked sternly. "I think I know how he managed to take down Kim so easily. And if there’s someone to take him down, it should be me."fгeewёbnoѵel.cσm
