Chapter 261: Isn’t she an orphan?

Marcus quietly sat behind the wide desk. He was holding his hands in front of him, deep in thought.

In front of him was a computer with the article and comments on the screen. Every second, a new comment would rise. But the dummy account was already at the top of the comments because of the likes and engagement it received.

"Who..." he muttered, eyes glinting malevolently. "... this can’t be."

Marcus clenched his teeth and took out his phone, sending a quick message to two people. After he sent it, he closed the tab and called it a day. He couldn’t focus on his work ever since this news reached him. There was no use for him to stay overtime since it wouldn’t change the fact Michael held a big chunk of the company shares.

When his message reached the two people Marcus contacted, they quickly went to a bar he mentioned.

An hour later, Marcus reached the private VIP room on the second floor of the nightclub. When he arrived, Shanaiah and Vincent were already there. His expression turned sour the second he met Vincent’s eyes. It was the same for Vincent.

"Marcus, are you trying to make peace with Vincent?" Shanaiah happily clapped. "If so, then I’ll happily be the witness. This is nice, like the good old times."

Vincent hissed. "There’s nothing good about the old times."

Until now, Marcus and Vincent hadn’t spoken a word to each other. Both of them were prideful individuals. Just a simple apology wouldn’t fix a problem as big as the one they had. Moreover, because of their fight, it put them in a tight situation.

Vincent blamed Marcus for it. If Marcus didn’t try to flirt with Fil, Vincent wouldn’t be too enraged to be in a fight.

As for Marcus, he blamed Vincent for not knowing when to let go.

Marcus sat down on the lounge chair and pulled out his phone without a word. After a second, Vincent and Shanaiah heard their phone ring. Checking out the message, they clicked the link Marcus sent them.

"What is this?" Shanaiah murmured, reading the article carefully. "So?"

Vincent also finished reading right after Shanaiah, looking at Marcus with displeasure. "What’s this?"

"Check the top comment." Marcus jerked his chin toward their phones. "After you read them, we can talk."

"Tch." Vincent snorted, but still read anyway.

"Marcus, can you just tell me?" Shanaiah was reluctant to read more; she disliked reading too much. And reading the article was already too much reading for her. "You know, reading makes me dizzy. I mean, I can’t stay on the phone because I’m trying to protect my eyes."

She smiled sweetly, trying to coax her way into getting the easy way, like usual.

At the same time she finished coaxing, Vincent finished reading. This time, his expression was inexplicably dark. Now, he understood why Marcus suddenly contacted him after months of purposely staying away from each other’s ways.

This matter was more important than their fight.

"This is impossible." Vincent lifted his eyes to Marcus. "Didn’t you say you’ve cleaned it up?"

"Clean, what up?" Shanaiah tilted her head to the side.

Vincent felt irritated at Shanaiah, but knowing she was nothing but a beautiful shell, he didn’t hope she would read the comments. "Alicia."

Shanaiah’s entire body stiffened the moment that name reached her ears. Her breath hitched as her eyes widened, looking at Vincent with a pale complexion.

"What — what are you talking about?" Her voice now carried nervousness. "Why are you suddenly mentioning that name?" freewebnøvel.com

"Someone... knows she’s missing," Marcus remarked, and a morbid silence immediately followed.

Shanaiah shook her head. "No, that can’t be right." She darted her eyes between the two and forced out a laugh. "You’re messing with me, are you? Tell me. You two already made up and you simply —"

"Do you think I want to be in the same room as this guy again!?" Marcus irritably slammed his hand against the table, grinding his teeth angrily. "Someone knows about what we did, Shanaiah. Do you think I take that as a joke?"

Her breath hitched once again as a sense of dread crept up to her heart.

Vincent couldn’t even focus on Marcus’s remarks about him as he gazed down.

"How?" Vincent breathed out, clasping his hands together. "Isn’t she an orphan?"

"That’s what I want to know," Marcus hissed. "Did any of you tell anyone about this?"

"Are you crazy?" Vincent hissed and glared daggers at him. "Why would we tell anyone about it when it can ruin us?!"

Marcus knew that, but he wasn’t talking about Vincent. He turned to Shanaiah, only to see her shake her head.

"It’s not me!" Shanaiah waved her hands profusely. "Why would I tell anyone? Among the three of us, I’d be the most implicated by this if I tell anyone."

Vincent frowned. "Shanaiah, you’ve been drinking every day. Not only that, but you also get high to the point you almost overdosed a few times. Are you sure you didn’t mention it to anyone in passing?"

"Are you insane?!" Shanaiah sprung up from her seat, shouting her lungs out. "Do you even know why I get high and drink all the freaking time?! Alcohol and drugs make me forget about that night! I couldn’t even function properly anymore because of it!"

What she said was almost like an understatement.

Every single day, Shanaiah had to live with not just guilt, but also the ghost of that person. If not for her drinking and drug habits, she would’ve been in a mental institution by now.

She clasped her hands into tight fists, looking at them fiercely. "Whoever this person probably doesn’t have evidence! If they have, they’ve already gone to the police and reported the matter. Or better yet, exposed us!" she huffed, trying to calm herself down.

"You two better get your act together," she warned with her finger pointing at them. "And don’t you ever mention that name again. As long as we three keep a tight lip, no one will ever find out. If you do, the three of us will end up in jail. We’ve always been in the same boat ever since that day. So, don’t you ever accuse me again of such nonsense because if I wanted to talk, I would’ve done it long ago."

Marcus and Vincent looked into her fiery eyes and mentally agreed with her. So long as they won’t say a word, no one will find out. After all, the only people who knew what actually happened were the three of them.
