The Devil's Good Girl-Chapter 260: Bad for the business
Chapter 260: Bad for the business
[ARKWRIGHT CORPORATION]
Michael stood in the elevator alone when it dinged and stopped midway. Snapping his eyes at the parting door, the corner of his lips curled up.
There, standing outside, was Marcus. He sneered the moment he saw the person inside the lift.
"Getting in, Director Arkwright?" Michael tilted his head a little. "If not, I’ll go then."
Marcus’s eyes sizzled with coldness, but he still got into the lift. Not joining Michael would be akin to a wounded puppy trying to run away from a beast. He would rather swallow sharing the same air with him than hurt his already injured ego.
As the door closed, a thick silence instantly enveloped the lift.
Sliding his eyes to the corner, Marcus mentally clicked his tongue.
A few months ago, the Arkwright Corporation faced a crisis that could make the entire company crumble to nothing. This happened weeks after Marcus faced public criticism for the leaked clip of him and Vincent fighting.
At that time, the company needed a lot of funding, but no investors wanted to associate themselves with them. The excuse they used was because of Marcus’s violent actions from the leaked video of his brawl. He thought things would be over until one international investment company offered them help. Desperate, Marcus’s family accepted their terms even though they were a total rip-off.
But the day the new shareholder was announced, Michael was the one who came.
It didn’t take long for Marcus to put all the pieces together.
The fight with Vincent, the leaked video, the sudden withdrawal of their investors, their dipping stock, and then the lack of interest from other investors. For a scheming person like Marcus, he knew the timing was too much of a coincidence. Not like Michael denied it.
Michael didn’t even deny that he purposely told Fil of the wrong time to come to that party. Or the fact he lied to everyone about being the black sheep of his family!
He didn’t deny them without remorse, saying, "Why would I feel bad for the people who lie all the time?"
Hence, Marcus loathed this person more than anyone in the world.
"Director Marcus, I heard about an article this morning." After a long, stifling silence, Michael’s cocky voice sliced through the air. "I’m a little concerned since your name is being dragged into it."
Marcus frowned. "Michael, it seemed you got plenty of time to be on the internet all the time."
"The Internet is a very important thing for me as a trader." Michael smiled. "You should try it sometime, Marcus. Read some economic articles or any current affairs to know the flow of money."
Marcus’s eyes flickered with spite. "Hah!" he didn’t say anything else, though.
Michael was already annoying in the past. However, it was tolerable because he was a loser. Now, he was ten times more annoying and arrogant.
DING!
"Oh, I’m here!" Michael casually strode off.
When he stepped out, he turned around and faced Marcus. "Check the internet, Director Arkwright. I’m saying this for our old time’s sake. Also, it would be bad for the business if you got involved in a murder investigation."
Michael smiled politely, watching the door slowly closed between them. His smile gradually dissipated, replaced with nothing but coldness. He gazed at the door sharply and sighed faintly.
’Marcus, once an investigation is opened, this entire company will collapse.’
Michael pledged to find Alicia’s remains, even if he had to spend his entire life doing it. That was his only purpose for being here. He wouldn’t stop until he brought home Alicia, and made those who ruined her pay a heavy price.
Just as Michael turned on his heel, he felt his phone vibrated. He stopped and checked his phone, furrowing his brows as soon as he saw Fil’s name on the screen.
"Is there something wrong?" he wondered to himself. "We didn’t talk since she left."
Thinking it was an emergency, he felt a little worried. Marcus and Vincent were in a tight spot. Although Michael wasn’t worried about Vincent that much, he thought Marcus found a way to bother her again. Marcus was working on a project that was beyond his capacity. It wouldn’t be a surprise for a thick-faced like him to bother Fil for help.
"Hello?" he answered. "Is everything okay?"
Fil, who was on the other end of the line, found his first question weird. "Yes, Mike. Everything’s okay."
"Are you sure? Or is someone bothering you again?"
Hearing his line of question brought a smile to her face. Michael used to be the biggest jerk she knew. But when they became partners in crime, she found him more pleasing. He was more considerate and polite than everyone thought.
"Why are you asking that?" She humored. "No one’s bothering me, alright? I’m okay."
Michael arched a brow. "Then why are you calling me out of the blue?"
"Because I want to know if you’re okay," she explained with a sigh. "Elise told me about this article she read online. I’m not going to ask if it’s you, but I just thought it’s good to check up on you."
"Ahh..." Michael relaxed, resuming his steps as he laughed. "That’s nice of you. I’m okay. You?"
"I’m getting married."
"So soon? Am I invited?" ƒreewebɳovel.com
"I haven’t decided on that yet, Mike."
Michael chuckled, indulging with her since it would be nice to hear she was living a good life. Fil reminded him of Alicia. Hence, he was interested in knowing how her life turned out without revenge in her thought process.

Meanwhile, when Marcus reached the floor of his office, his assistant immediately followed him. Before Marcus could sit down, his assistant already handed him the new rumors circulating on the internet.
The article was neither long nor short, but it incited intrigued.
What made this vague article concerning were some comments. One of the commenters was a dummy account, but this person mentioned him, Vincent, and another female socialite for doing horrific bullying that led to the death of a pitiful working student.
"Director, we’re already —"
"Get out." Marcus’s hands trembled as his complexion was pale."
"But —"
"I said out!" he roared, making the assistant scurry away.
As soon as the door closed, Marcus held his breath as he gazed down at the tablet in his hand. His shoulder shuddered, reading the commenter’s name:
