The Devil's Good Girl-Chapter 277: Fulfilling the wish of a dying man
Chapter 277: Fulfilling the wish of a dying man
"Why are you letting her and not us!?"
"What nonsense is this?!"
"What does Grandpa want from her!?"
The Hale Family’s hysterical voices rang behind Fil even when the door was closed.
She looked up and saw Raul smiling weakly at her. freeweɓnøvel.com
"Apologies for that, Miss Fil," said Raul apologetically.
"It’s alright. I know it’s what the chairman wants," Fil offered him a reassuring smile, earning a sigh of relief from Raul. "Where is he?"
"He’s there, Miss Fil. Please." Raul motioned his hand in a direction and lowered his head.
Fil sported a short smile before walking in. She quickly glimpsed at the bed where Felix was lying near the window and she immediately felt this tightness in her chest.
"Chairman," she called soothingly as she approached, sitting down on the chair beside the bed.
At the same time, Felix Hale turned his head weakly. The corner of his wrinkly lips curled up at the sight of her. He raised his hand weakly, but because of his health, he could barely do so. Hence, Fil quickly leaned forward to hold his hand.
Felix let out a short chuckle. Now he could see her better.
"Filomena, my child." His voice was weak, but it was full of affection and longing. Perhaps there was also a tinge of regret in them. "I’m so glad you finally visited me."
Fil smiled regrettably. "I’m sorry I didn’t visit before, Chairman."
"It’s alright, my child. I understand what happened." He blinked his eyes as if to nod. "I am sorry. It must be difficult for you to come here, knowing Vincent would be here."
"What Vincent and I had is a part of the past," she said sweetly. "Seeing him again... is fine now."
Felix let out a shallow breath, looking at how Fil became such a fine young woman. His only delight during the entire time he was hospitalized was to know about her happenings in life. It might sound perverted as if he was a stalker, but he simply wanted to make sure his daughter was doing well. His days were already numbered, after all.
"Filomena, forgive me for raising such people," he expressed.
At this point, he couldn’t help but think it was much better that Fil was raised by a loving couple instead of raising her alone. Look at Rosalind and her children. Felix was a failure to raise such people.
He might have an excuse for why Rosalind turned out to be like this, but Felix had no excuse for Vincent or Valerie. He didn’t guide them well and simply thought Rosalind was capable of bringing up good people in the world.
"Chairman..." Fil slowly placed his hand on her cheek, smiling. "... it’s not your fault and I am okay now. They might’ve hurt me, but they can no longer do that."
Felix forced a weak smile. "So, how have you been, child?"
"I’m... I’m getting married."
He knew that already, but still, he asked, "Is he a good man?"
"He is." Her smile was short, but he could see it was genuine. "He takes care of me, he looks at me and makes me feel that I am the only woman in the world, and he always tries to understand me. He’s also patient and kind; he’s the type that made me wonder what I did in my past life to deserve such person and love."’
As she described Jackson, Fil couldn’t help but smile more. Talking about her groom was something she could do for an entire day, and she wouldn’t be tired of it.
"Of course, he isn’t perfect," she continued. "But who is?"
Felix let out another wave of chuckle. "That is right," he said. "No one’s perfect, but in my eyes, I’m sure you are perfectly imperfect."
His kind and generous words were more moving than discomforting. Her eyes softened as she stared at the chairman’s wrinkly face. When she was a child, she had always thought he looked very handsome and that his wife was very lucky. But now, only his eyes and kind soul reminded her of that handsome middle-aged man who lived in the biggest mansion in the town.
"How time passed, huh?" Felix sighed.
Just like Fil, all he could do was stare at her as if he were afraid he would forget this beautiful face who had such a kind smile.
’My daughter...’ he mentally called, touching her cheek and caressing it with his thumb. ’... I am truly sorry.’
"Chairman, it’s fine. It’s not your fault that Vincent and I didn’t work," Fil reassured him once again. "Even though we broke up and he did what he did, I never blamed you for it. If anything, the only sad thing about it is that I cannot see you whenever I want."
Felix paused. ’Did I speak aloud?’
"Hmm?" Fil raised her brows and tilted her head to the side.
Felix gazed at her strangely, wondering if he was having delirium and that he didn’t realize he was speaking his thoughts aloud. After all, there was no way Fil would hear his thoughts unless he voiced it out.
He smiled again and sighed. "That is not the only thing I want to apologize for, child," he explained. "There were so many things I did that I should apologize to you, to your grandfather, and to your parents."
Fil shook her head and smiled. "Grandpa, you don’t owe us an apology. I’m sure whatever you did, you had a reason for it."
If only she knew...
Felix felt defeated, knowing he wasn’t in the place to tell her everything he needed to apologize for. Fil was already at the point in her life where she was at peace. He didn’t want to ruin it just because he was dying.
It was better to keep the things he knew to his grave.
"Filomena, my child," he spoke again while staring deep into her eyes. "If you need anything — anything, whatever it was and you don’t know where to go, call Raul. He will help you and assist you to the best of his abilities. I might not be there for you anymore, but I would like to let you know I’ll always be on your side, my child."
Her heart warmed up, but she didn’t take it to heart. She simply nodded and held his hand for as long as she could, fulfilling the wish of a dying man.
