Chapter 305: Filomena lies

"What are you trying to do to me?"

Kenzo’s face paled, unable to decide whether he should be worried about how to stop his bleeding or wonder at the people outside the circle. Kenzo faintly heard everything that had happened. Dustin’s screams were initially faint to him, but the longer he tried, the louder Dustin’s cries were in his ears.

Before Kenzo knew it, he snapped out of his trance and regained awareness.

"What..." he trailed off when his eyes fell on the ground.

Looking back, his eyes dilated as his breath hitched. All the people lying motionless behind him were very familiar people. All of them were bleeding from their wrist, making him gulp nervously.

"No." He shook his head, wanting to step back but he couldn’t. Kenzo tried to lift his foot, but only a sense of familiarity came to him. Wasn’t this how he felt while eating outside the convenience store with Quentin?

Upon that thought, all the memories before Kenzo woke up in this strange place surged to him like a flood. For a second, his breath stopped as clarity dawned on him.

Slowly, Kenzo lifted his eyes to the people standing outside the circle.

Quentin was looking back at him with slight puzzlement. There was also Vincent, who didn’t carry any reaction, as if he was just staring into nothingness. Shanaiah was also looking back at Kenzo, sizing him up from head to foot.

Then, Kenzo’s eyes fell on Dustin, who was bound by these black chains on the ground.

"What is that...?’ Kenzo squinted his eyes at the dark aura seeping out of the chains around Dustin, and he could see this dark clinging to Dustin’s skin.

"Huh?" Dustin gazed down at the chains that Kenzo was staring at so curiously, but he couldn’t see what the man was seeing.

’Something’s wrong.’ Unbothered by Kenzo’s curiosity and Dustin’s confusion, Quentin squinted his eyes. ’He shouldn’t wake up.’

Even with a weak spell cast by a new witch, there was no way a normal human would get out of it without any help outside. The thought of this made his lips curve down.

If someone was interfering, then he could only think of a very few who were capable of stopping this.

"Shanaiah, check what is happening at the foot of this hill," Quentin ordered without taking his eyes off of Kenzo. "If you see anyone interfering with our cause... kill all of them."

Shanaiah turned to Quentin and happily nodded. "Okay!"

As soon as those words rolled out of her tongue, Shanaiah disappeared from her spot. However, only a few seconds later, Shanaiah’s body came flying back to where they were.

Quentin arched a brow as his eyes slid to where Shanaiah’s body rolled and stopped.

"Hah." He smirked, sensing two familiar auras coming on the top of the hill. He slowly turned and his eyes landed on two old faces.

"Alamo..." He trailed off as he leisurely shifted his eyes to the other person. "Jackson."

"Jack..." Dustin felt this heaviness lift off of his shoulders, almost sighing in relief. Earlier, he could barely hold on to hope because Quentin’s plans were spotless. But seeing that Jackson and Alamo were here, he knew there was a chance.

Alamo glanced at the situation briefly before setting their attention to the man behind all of this fiasco. Jackson, on the other hand, stared at the circle longer before his eyes fell on the haggard Dustin.

"It’s been a while since I’ve seen Dustin this exhausted and beaten!" Alamo mused as he smirked at Quentin. "Quentin, you’ve surely made it impossible for us to catch you. I must admit, you’ve impressed me greatly this time."

"I’ll take that as a compliment, Alamo."

Alamo chuckled before his smile slowly faded. "However, your time’s up. Quentin, tonight is going to be the biggest mistake you’ve ever made."

"I make no mistake, Alamo. If I want to hide, even your entire forces wouldn’t be able to catch me!" Quentin smirked. "And since I am not hiding, that means I am prepared to take even the entire vampire association single handedly."

"Alamo," Jackson called quietly, eyes still on Dustin. "Can you take off that chain?"

Alamo raised his brows and examined the chains tying Dustin. "No, I cannot. It cannot be broken by any of us here, except... him." His eyes landed on Kenzo’s figure. "For humans, that chain is a normal one. But for us, it’ll suck our soul slowly and painfully until we are trapped in it forever."

Jackson snapped his eyes at Quentin. "Can you get Kenzo out of that circle?"

"I cannot."

Quentin chuckled, not a bit displeased that the two of them were discussing such important matters in front of him. "That circle is unlike any other circle, Jackson. You might not understand this, for you were only lucky to be given an opportunity to enjoy Filomena’s heart."

"Step in it, and you will never get out of it," he continued with a vile smirk. "Well, anyway, it seemed Marcus was truly a disappointing one. Good thing I changed my mind before he spoils my plans."

Everyone intuitively gazed at Vincent, who was, until now, stood there like a puppet.

"I thought he would be a bit useful, but he’s more cowardly than I ever thought he was!" added Quentin, his voice laced with dismay. "Well, I didn’t have that much hope for him. He’s meant to die, anyway, once the sun has risen."

Wicked.

That was all everyone could of this man.

He was truly and purely evil from inside and out.

Even until now, his evilness surprised those who had known him since the days of yore. The only change Quentin had was that he was getting worse every time he woke up from his slumber.

"But since you’re in here, that saves me lots of time collecting her heart." Quentin smiled, his attention focused on Jackson. "Jackson, this has been long overdue."

"It has been," Jackson nodded. "Alamo, please take away Dustin from here and regroup with Fil."

He paused as his breath suspended. "Tell her... I’ll make it in time."

"Fil?" Quentin furrowed his brows. "What about her? Did you send her away to hide?"

"Did she ever hide from you?" Jackson was calm, but his tone was laced with mockery. "Quentin, even without a memory, she had never hid from you. If anything, she unknowingly gave you access to her life because you never scare her."

Quentin chuckled. "It is not Filomena Lovin, who isn’t scared of me. It is my queen."

"And once your queen has risen, the first person she would devour is you," Jackson stressed. "Filomena lies — she lies even to herself. The promises she gave you were all nothing but a mere bait to lure you into doing her plans. Quentin, you are foolish now and even when you were a prince."

Jackson breathed out through his lips, wielding the sword he was carrying to this place. He should’ve killed Quentin way before this ever happened. He should have done it when he decided to abandon some faraway towns to die of a plague.

"If only things would extend this far... then I would’ve started a rebellion and cut your head to hang at the gates of the empire."

A glint flickered across Quentin’s eyes as he sized up Jackson’s stance and figure.

"Oh, this reminds me of your stance before, Your Grace," Quentin chuckled. "However, it seemed you have forgotten that it is I who gave you the power to become the Duke of the Fitzroy. Without me, you are nothing but an illegitimate child of the duke who is meant to die by his brother’s hands."

What a joke.

Jackson could’ve gotten that power with or without Quentin’s help. The only real help Quentin gave him was that he supported his actions in the court with a few words.

"Enough said." Quentin spread his arms to the side, and his fingertips turned into claws instantly. "The past is in the past and whoever emerges victorious tonight will write the present."

As soon as those words rolled out of his tongue, Jackson and Quentin disappeared from their spots, only to meet halfway with their weapons between them.

At the same time, Alamo leaped out of his spot when Shanaiah suddenly lunged in his direction. A hollow crack appeared where her foot landed, displaying that it could shatter Alamo’s bones if she successfully landed on him.

Sending that Shanaiah was no longer a human nor a normal turned vampire, Alamo quickly leaped away to lure her from those who had no defense at the moment.

In no time, the top of the hill had turned into a fierce battlefield, leaving Dustin and Kenzo in their spots. Noticing that Jackson and Alamo were pushing back their opponents, Dustin forcibly rolled his body to the circle.

"Kenzo!" he called in between his heavy breaths. "Can you undo this?"

Kenzo clenched his teeth and tried lifting his foot. "I can’t."

Despite that, Kenzo still tried because he knew they had to rescue others. Glancing at everyone in the circle, his expression turned bitter, and he forced himself again. While doing so, they didn’t notice that Vincent’s blank eyes slowly showing life.
