The King's Unbreakable Wife-Chapter 195: Dead maid (1)
Chapter 195: Dead maid (1)
"Any word on how the party is going? On whom she invited into the palace?" Tabitha questioned Jane.
Tabitha wasn’t expecting an invitation nor was she planning to go as she was enjoying her time alone with Jeffrey and the occasional visits from Sofia. It would be better if Tobias came to see her but she knew not to expect to see him for a while.
"I have heard that the women she invited were a little peculiar. She has daughters of nobles sitting with those who should not be in the same room. I think the most talked about was a young woman with ties to a brothel-"
Tabitha spat her tea out. "That’s absurd. That kind of woman should never be in the palace where Sofia roams. You must have heard wrong."
"I believe it is true as the maids in the palace have started to view Hazel as a queen sent for the people. They are enjoying that she has not only allowed those with status into the palace but also her going to the gates the day of the coronation has worked well in her favour," said Jane.
While her peers thought that Hazel was being a good queen, Jane knew the truth that this was all an act Hazel was putting on a show to get the people to like her.
"Oh, the nobles will be sending complaints to the palace and Tobias will have to calm them. What is that girl thinking?" Tabitha wondered.
Hazel was already stirring up trouble as noblemen won’t stay quiet once they know who was around their daughters.
"She is trying desperately to win over the people of this kingdom. Soon she will realise that she should have been making close relationships with daughters from noble families. It is good that the princess could not attend as the things she would overhear would not be proper," Jane said purposely to get the queen heated.
"Regardless of her attitude, she should have been taught how to behave. I apologise for my plans to get her to listen to you not working."
"It is not your fault," Tabitha said as she wiped the last of the spilt tea from her dress. "She was never going to listen to me. The best way for her to learn now is to fail. Still, how could she invite such a person to the palace? There is already so much attention on her as we await news of a child."
Hazel should be looking to do something good to take some attention off waiting for a child. Her strange guest list would have the court speaking poorly of her.
"What if she were not to become pregnant at a reasonable time?" Jane inquired, hoping this would happen. It would help to humble Hazel a little. Having a child was her greatest duty as queen so should she fail, Hazel would find it hard to show her face.
Tabitha looked up at Jane, not finding the same amusement in it. Tobias needed to have a child with his wife to keep the kingdom in good spirits. It didn’t matter if Hazel would be replaced later on as the child would still be needed.
The more children Tobias had the better.
"She needs to worry a little less about looking good for the kingdom and more on becoming pregnant. How many nights has it been scheduled for them to share a room? Has she ever turned him away?" Tabitha questioned as she wasn’t given the sleeping days.
"The king spends the night with her and leaves in the morning. Unless she has been turning him away in private, there is no reason she should not be said to be pregnant soon. I am not close to any of her maids to get them to tell me," Jane said, bowing her head as she wasn’t of much use to Tabitha. fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓
"She purposely picked who wasn’t under my command. If what you said was true about the maid near her watching me then it is no coincidence that the maid is now with Hazel. It was Hazel’s doing and that is why she defended the maid. I underestimated how far she would go," Tabitha said, seeing a new side to Hazel.
Hazel had acted as though she had no interest in Tabitha but now Tabitha knew the truth.
"The party should still be going on right now. Would you like me to go take a look? You have also been worried about the king so I can find out what he is doing now. Allow me to get answers for you," Jane offered.
Tabitha started to relax. It was good to have someone eager to run around for her to find out what she wanted to know. "Please be quick and don’t be caught lurking around. I don’t need to hear of me watching over her. While you are gone, check that Sofia is not playing with those children again. That girl is turning out to be troublesome like her brother."
"I will stop her if I see her. Excuse me," Jane said then turned to leave.
These days she was of no help to Tabitha since she had followed the former queen out of the palace but now that she was returning, she would make it count. Hazel now being queen did not take away the hold Jane had over the maids. Many of them would be ready to share what they had witnessed Hazel doing or overheard.
Jane also had something to settle with the maid now by Hazel’s side as it was because of her that she had been slapped. She couldn’t take her frustration out on Hazel as the king would look to kill her so the maid was going to get the punishment she was meant to have from the beginning.
Jane hurried toward the palace doors, not stopping to speak to the guards or maids addressing her as she had an important task to do.
"Well, if it isn’t Lady Tabitha’s maid. Where might you be going in such a hurry?"
Jane stopped after hearing the question from Franklin. "I am getting something for the queen."
"I believe the mansion the queen is in now was prepared with all her needs. Did she send you to do a little bit of spying? Your name is Jane right?" Franklin asked, needing to confirm if this was who Grant once spoke of.
"It is," Jane replied.
"Well, I have some news about the current queen that you should tell your lady. Follow me so we can speak in private," Franklin said, leading Jane out of sight.
