Chapter 196: Dead maid (2)

"How far do you intend to go to speak? I must get what I was sent for and go back to the queen- I mean Lady Tabitha," Jane corrected herself.

"So loyal. You don’t see Hazel as the new queen. Many of us don’t so you don’t need to worry about correcting yourself. The queen will be pleased to hear what the doctor found out about Hazel in regards to her having a child," said Franklin.

Jane’s eyes lit up as this was something good she could share with the queen. Was Franklin close to the doctor tending to Hazel?

"It’s best you hear of it from the doctor’s mouth as I don’t know how to explain it. I can only count on Lady Tabitha to be the one to do something about it as the king pushes away any questions about his wife. I hope I can count on you to properly relay the message to her. Can I?" Franklin asked, placing his hand on the doorknob.

He would not enter until Jane agreed.

Jane nodded her head. "I want the best for the kingdom so if there is something wrong with the queen, I will gladly help."

"Great. The palace was at its best when the queen and all her followers were here. Ladies first," Franklin said, opening the door for Jane.

Jane entered first, finding it a little strange that the king would allow Berkeley to have anything to do with the queen’s health after all the trouble caused on the last day of the selection. Or was it that Berkeley was told something by another doctor?

"The light," Berkeley complained. "Must you disturb me now?"

Franklin used his right hand to cover his nose. "I told you to keep this room clean. It smells as though something is rotting here. If someone else comes and takes one whiff of this room, you are out of the palace or worse."

"No one comes here other than you and that one," Berkeley said, looking at Jane. "You two are an odd pair. Couldn’t you have found somewhere else to meet in secret?"

It took a moment for Jane to understand what the doctor was saying and then she felt disgusted as she would never be with Franklin. The man was starting to go bald in the centre of his head.

"Don’t be ridiculous. We are here to speak about the queen. Go on and tell her what you said to me. Oh, we’ll need to offer him something to get him to start talking," Franklin said, quietly picking up an empty glass bottle from the table to the left of him.

"Well, what does he-"

Jane was silenced by something hitting the back of her head. Her hand shook as the pain built up. Her mouth was opened but a sound did not come out of it.

"Thank you for not screaming," Franklin said before striking her again in the same spot.

Berkeley sighed as once again his room was a murder scene. As big as the palace was, why was it that people had to be killed here? There was only one bright side to this. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm

The doctor peered down at the maid who had fallen to the floor, saying something he could not understand. "Has she lost the ability to get words out? Interesting. Do not hit her again. I want her."

"That’s why I brought her here," Franklin replied, placing the bloody bottle back where he picked it up from. "A gift from Grant. Now you can’t say that I haven’t been bringing you enough tests."

"That one used to bring me a lot of maids. You’ll have to do better than her," Berkeley said, stooping down to get a better look at Jane. Her mouth was still moving but he couldn’t make out a word. He allowed her to tug on his coat with her messy hands from trying to touch her wound.

"You’ll have more soon so be patient. I can’t bring too many here and would it kill you to get rid of whoever you’re hiding here? Don’t take any more bodies that did not come from the court. If you are caught with someone innocent, I’ll personally kill you," Franklin warned as he couldn’t have the doctor speak of who brought him bodies.

"No one ever comes here other than you to bring death or plot. The other doctors don’t even come," Berkeley said, a little sad but then he liked that they were hard at work creating medicines and making new discoveries.

As doctors their focus shouldn’t be on anything else.

"Still, cover up the smell before it reaches outside the door. Where do you take the bodies? No, I don’t want to know," Franklin changed his mind. "It smells like they are all here. What are you going to do with this one?"

"You don’t want to know where I am disposing of the bodies I don’t need but you want to know what I am going to use her for? That is not smart. How did you make it into the court?" Berkeley asked, wanting an honest answer.

Some of the men who visited him lacked sense and would be lucky to get a job shovelling around horse shit.

"You," Franklin sneered, reaching for the bottle.

"I am never going to die in here by your hands so I suggest you let go of that bottle. I hope you didn’t leave a crack on it since I had something to put in there. Do you wish to try?" Berkeley asked as Franklin’s hand was still on the bottle. "You’ll make a great test."

Franklin let go of the bottle. This room was the doctor’s playground so there was a high chance the doctor would overpower him. Plus, Berkeley was better alive than dead. "I was never here," he said, turning around to leave before someone could pass by.

Berkeley watched as the man left and then turned his attention back to Jane. Her eyes were now closed but she was still alive. It would have been better for her if she had just died. He wouldn’t kill her before the experiment started as he wanted to see or hear what she was feeling.

"This must be some sort of karma for all the maids you lured here. Let’s see what tools can treat that nasty wound he gave you," Berkeley said, turning her head to see the damage. "You passed out from that? I must be able to treat that and keep you alive a little longer. Or maybe, you should be a test for me to be able to heal others who injure their head."
