Chapter 197: Dead maid (3)

"The party went well. Once the women calmed down and got over who was invited, they started to have fun. Though that Sophia woman was looking to stir up a lot of trouble. I had to stand close and she kept speaking about her husband. All the things he does in the court," Lynn said as she brushed Hazel’s hair.

"Is that so? Well if she’s so talkative about her husband’s work then I should keep her around. It is a shame that she does love looking down on others. I wouldn’t have expected it with all that is said about her. Maybe it is a lie," Hazel wondered.

Unless Sophia didn’t care at all what was said about her since she got the life she was after.

"It is not all a lie, Your Majesty. I have seen a few things concerning how she got married. She is one that the maids used to keep an eye on because they knew her advances would entertain them. And this wasn’t when she was courting her now husband," Lynn revealed.

"I think we should stop here because I don’t want the answer to who she was with before," Hazel replied, fearing she would hear Tobias’s name.

Hazel was lucky enough not have to come across any of the women Tobias had courted before. It was the one luck she hoped she could keep.

"Don’t worry. It was not the king but someone close to him. She ended up embarrassed if I remember correctly. Who was it?" Lynn questioned, trying to remember.

"I would bet my favourite book it was Edgar," Hazel replied. "When you are finished here, you may retire Lynn. You are the last one here and even brought my food for me."

"It is nothing. I like tending to you, my queen. Since the king is busy, I thought you would enjoy having someone around so I must admit that I have been brushing your hair a bit slow to stay here. I’m sorry," Lynn apologised.

"I had noticed. My hair is starting to get a little longer but it is not that long to require so much brushing. I shall be fine alone as there is a book I want to finish and you need to have dinner. You’ve been by my side since sunrise and are still here now. Please get some rest," Hazel urged Lynn.

Hazel loved Lynn’s company but at the same time, Lynn needed time to herself before she started to hate the work she was doing.

"I suppose I must leave so the king can come," Lynn teased.

Hazel’s eyes widened as no one had ever brought up the fact that Tobias slept here. Only the guards knew since Tobias sometimes exited her door but they were loyal to Tobias. "How did you know?"

"Forgive me for being out of turn to bring it up but I had noticed your water was low and wanted to return with more. I saw the king climbing up the outside. I will be more than happy to help him sneak here. I can distract any of the maids coming this way," Lynn offered.

Lynn was ready to do anything so the queen wouldn’t be alone at night. It was quite foolish to keep the king and queen in different rooms but Lynn was told she was a commoner so she wouldn’t understand it. Lynn believed it was to give the king the chance to have other women behind the queen’s back.

"I told you to speak freely with me in private so you don’t need to apologise and thank you," Hazel said.

With Lynn so easily seeing Tobias they needed more people to get him here in secret or maybe it was just time for Tobias to openly walk here and put an end to separate rooms. There were nights when Hazel wanted to surprise him in his bedroom.

Lynn put down the brush as there was nothing more she could do to stall leaving the queen and she was going to be late for the meeting with Julia. If she didn’t show now there might never be another moment to get Julia to open up with her.

"I shall take my leave now. Please have a good night," Lynn said, curtsying before walking to the door. "Goodnight," she told the two guards standing outside Hazel’s door. With them here and the king possibly coming later, Lynn did not need to worry about leaving Hazel alone.

Lynn ran to where she was meant to meet Julia so she wouldn’t be late. The queen favoured them both so they should try to get along well. "How does she know about this place?" Lynn asked herself as she made her way up an old tower no longer used because of its state. "Julia," Lynn softly called out.

It was old but if they were caught here they would both be in trouble and cause problems for Hazel.

Julia stepped out of a dark corner and held up a bottle of rum for Lynn to see. "I have something good for us to try."

"That, why do you have that? It’s expensive and if it came from the-"

"It did not. It was a gift from someone to me. That lover you spoke of," Julia said as she moved to take a seat on the balcony. She peered over to look at how high up there were.

Lynn smiled as she had guessed right that Julia had a lover. She joined Julia in sitting on the balcony so she could have a little taste of the rum but not too much as they had to be in a good state of mind to serve Hazel in the morning.

"Is it wrong that I want to try everything I normally serve them? I can’t help wondering what it would be like to enjoy nice rums. Do you mind sharing who gave it to you or must you keep it a secret?" Lynn asked.

Julia took a sip of the rum gifted to her by Grant and then offered the bottle to Lynn. "I must keep it a secret as he is well above my status. There is a lot on my mind these days so excuse me for not being so talkative when we tend to the queen."

"I see. I hope that you are safe with him. You tend to have a few bruises whenever you return to the palace from your day off so we worry but you never answer our questions. We have to take care of each other," Lynn said, then brought the bottle to her lips.

Julia waited for Lynn to tilt her head back and with both Lynn’s hands holding onto the bottle because she didn’t want to drop it, Julia took the chance to push Lynn from the balcony and jumped to the side before Lynn could attempt to grab her.

It was a painful sacrifice to have to let go of the gift from Grant but this was all she had to make Lynn’s death seem like a mistake.

Julia hurried down the tower to get away before anyone close by heard Lynn hitting the ground or the scream could come and see her. If Lynn hadn’t taken up all of Hazel’s attention this would not have happened.
