The King's Unbreakable Wife-Chapter 198: Dead maid (4)
Chapter 198: Dead maid (4)
"Do you think it is fair for you to be yawning so often when I am also tired and holding it in, Gunner? You are making me want to sleep," Tobias said, looking up at his helper who wasn’t of much help.
"My apologies," Gunner responded, covering his mouth to hide another coming yawn.
"You brought me here to deal with this mess so late so you can’t be tired now. Be quick to look over the supplies we are sending," Tobias said, handing a paper over to Gunner to be read. "How long will this war at the border go on for? We’re sending too many of our supplies and nothing is being done about the war."
"I should kill the men in court-"
"You can’t!" Gunner yelled, afraid he would have to hear more complaints about the king. "You already killed one and they are still looking for him."
"That was his fault," Tobias replied, not regretting the murder he committed. "He shouldn’t have been snooping around."
The morning after Tobias’s wedding night with Hazel, he had first believed it was only his mother coming to check that Hazel had bled but while he was out with Hazel, he had learned that someone else visited the room to check if there was blood on the blankets before the maids could clean the room.
The blood on the blanket was from Tobias cutting himself since he had washed the other but it still bothered him that there was someone sneaking around.
While Hazel slept peacefully, Tobias snuck away to kill the man who snooped around their room. He never mentioned a word of it to Hazel and he didn’t plan to. He was in luck that nothing about the dead man had reached Hazel’s ears.
"No one shall know about it unless you speak of it and I have already warned you that should my wife find out about it, I shall be coming for you neck next. You like your neck, don’t you?" Tobias asked.
Hazel should live in bliss thinking that he wasn’t hurting anyone, not even a fly in the palace. Taking the snooper’s life had felt good like the old times when he would just kill those coming after him. It was a pity he would be called a tyrant if he let his inner thoughts come to life.
"I won’t say a word of it to the queen," Gunner promised. He didn’t want to be the one in the middle of the queen and king.
Tobias was already hard to work for and though the queen seemed to have a good hold on the king to get him to be like a puppy before her, Gunner feared the time when the queen would not be around and he had to deal with the demon before him.
Tobias sighed, leaning back in his chair. "I hope she isn’t too lonely without me. Having to be in a large room all alone. She must be sad."
"Or reading a book," Gunner said, remembering how the king sulked when he found that the queen didn’t notice he was not around because she was so immersed in a book. "I am looking around for a room to be the queen’s special library."
"I think I am changing my mind about that one as if I give her more books she will love that more than me. How is it that I am losing my wife to characters that are not real?" Tobias asked.
He was starting to wonder if Hazel’s love of these books had something to do with the men in them.
"It is not that. It is a normal hobby of women all through the town to love those books. Even my sister loves reading a few as it is filled with something for them to gossip about. A bit dramatic for my taste but I am not a woman so what do I know," said Gunner.
"Should I try reading one to see what she likes? I’d hate to think that it is someone not like me. Is she even reading romantic stories?" Tobias wondered. "We’re stopping here for the night. I’ve been away from her for too long. I’ve broken one promise."
Hazel had to eat dinner alone, something Tobias had promised she would never need to do as he would be finished with his work by then.
"The queen’s maid said that the queen was fine with it. Her dinner was sent to her bedroom. What?" Gunner added as the king gave him a strange look.
"You don’t understand women. That is why you are not married yet. Clear up this for me and bring it to me in the morning. I will sign off on whatever supplies the border guards should have then. Inform the court to send me matters about war earlier than this. Good night," Tobias said, getting up from his seat.
"W-Wait," Gunner said, but it was pointless as Tobias was already at the door. "Good night."
Tobias stretched his arms as soon as he stepped out of the room. He was tired and wanted to fall on a bed right now but he had to make it to Hazel’s room to apologise for not joining her at dinner. "Should I get her flowers?"
The garden she liked was far out of the way but though he was tired, Tobias considered making a detour to grab a few for her.
"I’m done for the night so whatever you are coming to bother me with you can save it for another day," Tobias said to the guards running toward him.
"Your Majesty, I am afraid that it cannot wait until morning. We had to call upon members of the court to come here as a maid was found dead by the old tower."
"It’s not that I don’t care but the court and guards will look into it and then inform me once they have gathered enough evidence about what happened," Tobias said.
There were many incidents in the palace and since Tobias already had many duties, there were people in the court to look over these incidents and bring the conclusion to him.
"Someone is pointing out the maid to be one seen with the queen. We don’t want to wake the maids to bring too much attention to it yet or wake the queen to confirm, so it was suggested to bring you."
Tobias now wished he had continued with his work so he wouldn’t be hearing this news. He walked in the direction the guards had come from, not knowing where he had to go but he was lost in thought to ask where the maid had died.
Tobias hoped that it wasn’t one of Hazel’s maids as she wouldn’t take the news well.
