Chapter 42: Petty (1)

Another day came in the Castro kingdom and the women in the selection soon gathered to be told about what the day would bring and who would be chosen to spend time with the prince.

Hazel stood to the far left of the group with Linda by her side while Helena stood on the right with her friends. Hazel paid no attention to Helena because she had long moved on from the talk she had with Helena last night.

A new day was here so it was time to think of what it would bring.

"Do you think they follow her everywhere she goes? Stands outside the bathroom to wait for her?" Linda whispered to Hazel about the queen’s maids who were always with her. "I’ve been hearing that royals don’t have to lift a finger when they bathe."

"Marry the prince and you’ll find out or ask him. He is right behind the queen," Hazel said, watching Tobias follow his mother.

She squinted her eyes, trying to check if she was seeing wrong or if there seemed to be something wrong with Tobias. Sometimes it didn’t look like he wanted to be here, but today, he looked like someone had just bothered him.

’Was it the queen?’ Hazel wondered. She crossed her fingers in hopes that Tobias didn’t get scolded for anything that happened when she was with him. Like walking by his side or something she spoke of.

"Your Majesty," the woman greeted the queen with a curtsy.

"Good morning. I hope that your first night in the palace was pleasant. I am happy to have not received any reports of anyone sneaking out of their rooms to get up to no good. The selection is going smoothly and so fast as we are already on our second day. You must all be so excited to hear what you will do today," Tabitha said, looking around at the women as she spoke.

"You’ll spend the first part of your day dancing. Showing off your talents of dancing along to any music played today. Before you ask, you will not be going back to change so I hope you are wearing comfortable shoes. You never know what will be thrown your way in the palace so expect everything. Those who can’t keep up will find themselves fading away," Tabitha said, stopping to look at a young woman with shoes that would keep her back.

"I will be choosing the order of who dances with the prince. From now on, I will be selecting a woman of my choice to spend time with the prince. He will also select a woman he will spend time with. There are two chances for you to be with the prince later. Impress us now," Tabitha said and then walked off to lead them inside the ballroom. "Follow me closely."

Helena liked hearing that the queen would be picking along with the prince. To her, it sounded like the queen had gone out of her way to have her spend time with the prince. She couldn’t imagine that the queen had given up on her and was going to choose her as one of the women to be with the prince later.

Helena hurried to catch up to where the queen was to walk right behind her. Dancing was something Helena was good at so she did not doubt she would impress both the queen and the prince. Also reminding everyone here of how she danced at the ball.

Hazel tried to get closer to Tobias to ask him if he was alright, but as the other women were like flies around him, it was hard to get near.

Hazel gave up, deciding to wait until it would be her time to dance with him. Dancing together luckily meant that they would be away from the group so no one would hear what was said.

Hazel entered the ballroom she was in not long ago to celebrate the selection starting. Memories of her meeting Tobias outside came rushing back to her and then having fun with Linda off to the side.

They were greeted by the same musicians who played at the ball. She remembered their faces because she had stopped to look at who exactly had perfectly played a song she liked.

All the women stood in a line, awaiting who the queen would pick first while Tobias and Tabitha stood side by side.

Tobias already had his mind made up on who he would pick first but knew his mother would be petty and not pick Hazel. She had added this new rule of her picking a woman along with him just so she would get her way. So he wouldn’t be alone with Hazel again.

Tobias thought about it before bed and could not understand why his mother would be against him picking Hazel. She came from a good family, there weren’t any rumours going around about her, and she was the perfect lady in his eyes. Well, some might disagree when she spoke and offered her honest opinion, but he liked it.

"The first young woman to have shared a dance with the prince will be Helena Wallace. I would love to witness a continuation of what happened at the ball. Do your best," Tabitha said, leaving Tobias’s side to take her seat where she would look over the dance.

She was giving Helena what was meant for her and looked forward to being impressed once more.

Tobias smiled because he could have predicted his mother’s choice. If she thought this was going to hit him hard and have him regret the way he messed with her plans, she was greatly mistaken. This made it all the more fun for him. He hoped that along the way Hazel might get a little jealous he was dancing with her sister.

It was like his mother was helping him,

Helena wasted no time stepping out from the line of women to join Tobias for a dance. It was all going back to the way it was meant to be. Now she felt like a fool for arguing with Hazel when the queen had plans to bring attention back to her.

Helena knew that it was all one big nightmare which had now vanished because when she placed her hand in the prince’s he kept smiling. Of course, he couldn’t possibly dislike her when she had done nothing wrong. Now that it was her turn, Helena wished that Hazel would understand what she felt before and forgive her.

Then they could go back to being the happy sisters they were before.

Tobias and Helena walked to the centre of the ballroom and took position before the music began. All eyes were on the two of them as they began to dance.
