Chapter 636: Chapter 629: Reply to the Letter

Gao Yuan understood each word Yang Yi said, and he also fully grasped each one Xinghe mentioned; he, of course, understood what their words meant when linked together.

As for Morse code and such, Gao Yuan was naturally not unfamiliar with it.

But the question was, on what grounds could Yang Yi be so sure that the Serpent People and the Graycloaks were using Morse code to communicate?

Or rather, why was it that Yang Yi realized the Serpent People and Graycloaks were using Morse code to communicate, and others couldn’t think of it?

Murphy was a Sanitation Worker, and so was Larry; now Larry was coerced into switching sides, but it was the Serpent People who forced him because Sanitation Workers couldn’t directly contact the Serpent People. If the Serpent People were to attack, it would be a full-on assault—the kind that wipes out everyone.

So, on what basis did Yang Yi, after simply asking a few questions about the principle of this communicator, determine that the Serpent People were using Morse code to communicate, while others, including the Sanitation Workers, couldn’t come up with the same conclusion?

Now Gao Yuan also felt that Yang Yi’s words made a lot of sense, but the problem was, this was just Yang Yi’s speculation; what if it wasn’t the case?

Yang Yi raised his voice as he loudly called out, "Anton!"

A man with a face full of beard immediately came out from a room next door, and Yang Yi quietly said, "Gather the statements, ask Grewatov to put down his current task and come over, and contact the Blade Queen, they can make their move."

Only Anton remained by Yang Yi’s side, with the whereabouts of the other members of the Water Organization unknown; it seemed they had other tasks.

This meant Yang Yi only had one person by his side, with the Black Devil helping out, and as for Cerberus, they were outside preparing to defend against the Serpent People’s attack.

Yang Yi was formidable indeed, truly formidable; he truly lived up to his reputation as the man who single-handedly saved the fate of humanity.

Gao Yuan suddenly started to somewhat idolize Yang Yi, this young and unbelievably handsome real man.

Come to think of it, if it weren’t for Yang Yi who got hold of the Revelation, and also thwarted the conspiracies of the Graycloaks and Sanitation Workers, it’s very possible that humanity would have engaged in a civil war amongst themselves before the Serpent People even attacked, and it would have been a nuclear war at that.

And then, Yang Yi caused Shenzhou to start constructing refuges way ahead of time and to accelerate the building of underground bases—just think, how many Shenzhou People did he enable to survive as a result, and how much of Shenzhou’s industrial strength was preserved?

Under Gao Yuan’s watch, Anton quickly went through several independent rooms, then swiftly placed a shorthand notebook in front of Yang Yi, and then, the Black Devil, Grewatov, emerged; his hands were still damp, obviously he had just washed them.

After placing the shorthand notebook down, Anton left, whereas Grewatov, with a serious expression, said, "Progress isn’t going too well, two people have already been interrogated for the second round because there’s only one question, and one has just started talking."

Yang Yi picked up the shorthand notebook, swiftly skimmed through it, and then picked up the second one, frowning as he said, "Hmm, the caliber of their stories is clearly unified."

Grewatov said solemnly, "We’re pressed for time; with this sort of rapid interrogation, it’s impossible to make the subjects psychologically collapse quickly. The near-identical testimony after two rounds is proof, meaning all three depositions are fabricated."

Yang Yi picked up the third deposition and then whispered, "Unknown origin, unknown method of operation, a dedicated person is responsible for communicating with the Serpent People..."

With a worried expression, Grewatov said, "Don’t expect to get any effective testimony now. They’re trying to complicate the issue. My suggestion is we immediately find more Graycloaks, the lower-level ones, and through mass interrogation, sieve out potentially useful information with a net-style search."

Yang Yi tapped the shorthand notebook on the desk, then whispered, "No, I have a bold assumption, and the interrogation records of the three high-ranking Graycloaks provide corroborating evidence for my idea—that is, the communication method between the Serpent People and the Graycloaks is very simple, simple enough that the Graycloaks must divert our attention to succeed. I believe that the results of the third interrogation will reveal an extremely complex communication method, one that cannot be used without specialized personnel."

Grewatov thought for a moment, then said, "A very simple communication method? I see, you mean... something like Morse code?"

Gao Yuan was shocked; if he hadn’t observed everything, he too wouldn’t have thought of Morse code, but as soon as Grewatov and Yang Yi discussed it, he immediately arrived at the same conclusion.

What goes on in the minds of these spies? What are they thinking about?

Yang Yi looked up and said, "Yes, what do you think?"

Grewatov fell into deep thought for a while, a full twenty seconds, before he said seriously, "Do you want to take the risk and try?"

Yang Yi smiled and replied, "Yes, because I know the Graycloaks’ code, and I don’t think they’ll change it. No one can create a new codebook in a short amount of time, and I also believe the Serpent People won’t have the patience for that."

Grewatov said seriously, "The Graycloaks’ encrypted Morse code, or the international standard code, it’s a gamble."

Yang Yi turned serious as well, and he said in a low voice, "Based on what I know about the Graycloaks, I’m convinced it’s their encrypted Morse code."

Grewatov exhaled and then pointed to the communicator on the table, "Then let’s get started, no time to waste!"

"I’m organizing my thoughts, considering how to communicate with the Serpent People, and what exactly to say."

Grewatov immediately said, "Keep it simple, concise, direct. The Serpent People don’t need to hear human lyricism, they just need to determine if human information is worth accepting."

Yang Yi nodded, "Good, I’ll speak, and you send the signal. I have the codebook memorized, but I’m not as proficient at sending Morse code as you are."

Grewatov immediately took his seat, and Yang Yi flipped open a shorthand notebook, magically producing a pen and began drawing dots and dashes on the paper.

Grewatov watched the Morse code being written by Yang Yi and started to read, "Cease attack, we’ve taken control of the situation, captured an alien of higher civilization, obtained Ark intelligence..., Is it ’Ark’ or ’spaceship’?"

"Ark!"

Grewatov paused only for a moment, discussed the choice of words with Yang Yi, and then continued, "Acquired the technology for immortality, the situation is urgent, please stop the attack immediately and instruct us on what to do next."

Yang Yi put down the pen, "That’s it, no need to make it too clear."

Grewatov thought for a moment, then nodded, "Okay, let’s put it that way."

Grewatov began to switch the communicator on and off repeatedly, varying only in the duration between signals.

Gao Yuan was stunned, because... Yang Yi and Grewatov were being too casual, they had already started a high-stakes gamble without so much as consulting anyone else.

Grewatov quickly finished sending the Morse code, then Yang Yi looked towards Xinghe and said, "So, what about receiving signals? There’s no screen on this communicator, no lights either, how will we know if a signal is received?"

The communicator had an obviously retrofitted switch, a button that toggled one way for on and the other for off, with no provision for lights or screens whatsoever.

Sending out a signal without even knowing how to receive one—spies aren’t supposed to be so reckless and roughshod, right?

Xinghe pondered for a moment and suggested, "Maybe it’s remote controlled?"

As soon as the words left his mouth, the button clicked, toggling to one side, then it began to switch to the other side.

Yang Yi clapped his hands together and laughed, "You’re right, it’s a remote control switch. It seems we’ve succeeded."
