The Ultimate War Of The Apocalypse-Chapter 663 - 656 Schrödinger’s Cat
Chapter 663: Chapter 656 Schrödinger’s Cat
Yang Yi was a spy.
A spy’s bravery should be implicit, restrained; no need to charge forward shouting slogans. Even if a sacrifice was to be made, it should happen quietly, discreetly behind the scenes, unknown and unremarked upon.
When a spy drew his gun, it often meant utter failure, yet the Black Devil was a spy’s action team; thus, they frequently faced real and fierce combat, appearing at the forefront as the purest form of force with the most direct and violent means.
Nevertheless, the Black Devil was not an army, so in Yang Yi’s view, it was best if they behaved like spies.
Be graceful—that was just a suggestion, but Yang Yi’s suggestion made Grewatov ponder for a long time, and finally, Grewatov decided to accept Yang Yi’s proposal.
Simply because the Black Devil’s only leader was a graceful man, as he had always been.
The prerequisite for maintaining grace was not needing to feel tense, not worrying that one’s arrangements might go awry, so confidence was the most important requirement for elegance.
"Let’s meet at the rendezvous point in thirty minutes; we could have a drink,"
Grewatov replied. He chose to trust his abilities, confident that the Black Devil would be without fault.
If the Serpent People could prevent the nuclear bomb from detonating, remaining would be useless; if they could not, there was no need to stay.
Yang Yi waved his hand and smiled, saying, "Let’s head back."
To the underground bunker, which was now the command center.
Zhang Yong hesitated, whispering, "Won’t this underground nuclear explosion collapse the bunker?"
Yang Yi nodded, "It’s possible, so we won’t go in."
"It would be so much better to just leave."
Zhang Yong sighed, then shook his head, "But we can’t go, we have to see the outcome. Besides, leaving now doesn’t make much difference compared to not leaving."
Yang Yi was ruthless, he had already determined to leave tens of thousands of Sanitation Workers behind in Djibouti forever, but he couldn’t completely control the Sanitation Workers in a short time.
So, those who should retreat did, but those who had to stay, had to stay because controlling the situation was essential. They couldn’t let the Sanitation Workers scatter nor give them the chance to tip off the Serpent People.
Although the Sanitation Workers and Graycloaks had been wiped out from Djibouti’s upper echelons, betrayal was only a matter of when, not if. It was hard to guarantee that under intense pressure to survive, someone from the Sanitation Workers wouldn’t snitch to the Serpent People.
Tens of thousands of people—it’s impossible for them all to be united. Even if some crack under pressure and break down, it could have irreversible consequences.
Even though the manhole cover plan was completely secret, the communicators had to be firmly controlled; no one was allowed to contact the Serpent People privately.
When Yang Yi and his team returned to the underground bunker, the Black Devil also arrived. The Water Organization and the Black Devil were equally precise in their timing.
Pavlovich was guarding the communicators. Guarding such things didn’t require a lot of people.
When the Water Organization and Black Devil converged at the door of the room where the communicators were stored, Larry, who had been busy inside and out, also just arrived.
"What are you all secretly doing?"
Larry spoke as if interrogating. He took a breath and said, "The Celestials have left, the Rams have left, the energy vehicles and Mechas from Shenzhou have left, and then people from the Solar System Squad started leaving Djibouti one after another; and now even Murphy has taken his people and left, only leaving us behind!"
Larry only had one person with him; he had been busy all night trying to calm people’s hearts, trying to prevent the soldiers who no longer trusted him from scattering. But as he was busy, he found that the comrades who should’ve been fighting alongside him were quietly slipping away.
Even if they were enemies just a moment ago, since they agreed to fight together, they needed to look the part. With an already present distrust, sneaking away would only lead to disintegration.
The Serpent People’s mothership was about to descend, which was both the reason Larry chose to stay and the reason he had always wanted to flee Djibouti.
If the Sanitation Workers escaped Djibouti, it’s hard to say how the Serpent People would react, and leaving Djibouti a few dozen kilometers away might not be safer than staying in Djibouti City District. That’s also why Larry, watching the Solar System’s forces withdraw, did not choose to follow them.
But staying in Djibouti while the people of the Solar System had completely left made Larry, with his acute sense of danger, instinctively feel uneasy.
It was still caused by an asymmetry of information. If he knew what would happen with the descent of the Serpent People’s mothership, he wouldn’t be in this difficult predicament of being stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Larry was waiting for Yang Yi’s answer. The Serpent People’s mothership was about to arrive, and leaving a few hours earlier to travel an extra few dozen or hundred kilometers actually meant little. But Larry had a second option.
Now that Yang Yi had almost no force left to suppress the Sanitation Workers, Larry could fully choose to keep his faith in the Celestials, or to regard the Serpent People as Celestials to worship.
Yang Yi checked his watch, then said to Larry, "I’m still here."
Yang Yi’s words greatly reassured Larry, because Poseidon was indeed still present, right in front of him, waiting for the arrival of the Serpent People alongside him.
"The mothership is about to descend. Let’s not stay here, come outside with me. We should witness this historic moment out there. Have you seen a mothership? I haven’t, and I want to take a look. Will you come?"
Larry hesitated for a moment, then nodded, "Alright! Bring the communicator!"
Yang Yi shrugged his shoulders, then he took the lead.
Less than five minutes remained until the Serpent People’s mothership descended.
Dawn had broken, and the sun was visible, yet the sky remained somewhat darkened.
Standing on the dock, Yang Yi took a deep breath. He looked up at the sky, and then he saw a shadow emerge from the east, covering the newly risen sun as if a dark cloud were obscuring the morning light.
The dark cloud swiftly grew larger, transforming from a thin edge to a curtain that seemed to envelope the entire sky.
The white clouds were pushed aside, replaced by a black drape, and as Yang Yi watched the sky engulfed in darkness in silence, dawn turning into the black of night once more, he glanced at his watch.
One minute left.
The Serpent People mothership was too large, so large that Yang Yi couldn’t begin to guess its size. Looking up, the sky was a circular blue ring, and above his head, there was only a black curtain, with no details visible.
The circular mothership, was it a hundred kilometers in diameter? Or two hundred? It was impossible to determine its altitude by sight.
A wind began to whip overhead, like the downdraft from a helicopter’s rotors, but the downdraft from the Serpent People’s mothership was hurricane-level.
The sea water started to recede from the dock, indicating that the mothership was descending rapidly. The dock, located on the edge of the downdraft, caused the water to blow away, waiting to surge back once the spacecraft finished descending.
Yang Yi exhaled softly, then the fierce wind suddenly disappeared—the mothership slowed its descent.
"So huge..."
At this moment, Larry no longer pondered whether he should flee or not; he was seriously doubting whether leaving Gao Yuan early would have brought him beyond the range of the mothership’s coverage.
Ten seconds left, the sea water began to flow back, and the huge waves slapped against the dock, but it wasn’t as exaggerated as a tsunami.
"We, we..."
Larry started to mutter to himself, not knowing what to say or what to do.
Just then, Larry’s expression suddenly froze. He looked somewhat puzzled, but his puzzled expression solidified on his face, and then, he began to slowly fall backward.
The thud finally drew Yang Yi’s attention away from the sky.
Larry’s expression was frozen; he had already fallen to the ground. And the people next to him, the people behind him, all those who were looking up at the mothership, were now collapsing one by one.
Without sound or warning, without any struggle, within Yang Yi’s view, there were only the dead.
Yang Yi moved his arms, trying to confirm that he was still alive. When he found himself indeed alive, he spoke up, "Are they all dead?"
After checking Larry’s neck, Zhang Yong stood up and said with a grimace, "Dead. How come we’re fine?"
Yang Yi thought for a moment, then spoke gravely, "The vaccine. The vaccine provided by the Serpent People might prevent the zombie virus, or it could be a timed... poison that kills them instantly. At the moment, that’s the only possibility I can think of."
Zhang Yong gave a wry smile and said, "They don’t even let people off like dogs, killed before even used up. The Serpent People... certainly didn’t plan to leave any survivors."
Zhang Yong wanted to say more, but just then, Grewatov suddenly counted down: "10, 9, 8,"
Xiao Ran stretched out her hand and waved it backwards, finding herself a bit far from Yang Yi. She stepped back, and Yang Yi also extended his hand, grasping Xiao Ran’s.
Yang Yi also reached out with his left hand, grabbing Kate’s hand.
Holding onto a woman with each hand, Yang Yi stood there listening to Grewatov’s countdown, whispering, "It’s a pity there’s no red wine, I would have liked a glass..."
Zhang Yong looked around, then put his hand on Anton’s shoulder, but Anton pushed his arm away, saying, "You’re not a woman."
Zhang Yong withdrew his hand with a grimace, clasping his hands together, "As if I fancy you..."
Anton put his arm on Zhang Yong’s shoulder, murmuring softly, "4, 3, 2..."
Zhang Yong didn’t knock Anton’s hand away. He said softly, "1, detonate!"
There was no sound, no tremor, only a burst of light beginning from the ground.
The shockwave quickly followed, due to the proximity.
The blast wave wasn’t very violent, as the nuclear detonation occurred underground, and there was no intense light radiation.
The earth no longer trembled but heaved dramatically. When everyone was thrown into the air, no one could continue to gaze at the mothership above.
The ensuing explosion robbed everyone of their ability to perceive sound. freewebnøvel.com
The nuclear detonation was successful, but there were no tanks in sight, nor any metal jets.
So the nuclear detonation was a success, but was the manhole cover plan successful?
Success or failure already had its outcome, and it had happened before Yang Yi and the others were thrown up; Yang Yi simply couldn’t see it, not because he was dead, but because everything happened too fast for him to perceive.
