Chapter 127: KIDS THESE DAYS

SOHEE sat on the chair next to the bed while Kim Heedo stood behind him as they listened to Go Gunjoon’s story.

"So, last year, when I was a freshman, I met Jung Byeol Sunbae who was in his senior year already," Go Gunjoon said, really starting his story from the start. "He was close to the sunbaes in the baseball club that I joined. And he was close to them because he was selling supplements that, apparently, helped the sunbaes get healthier and stronger as athletes."

Argh.

Sohee rolled his eyes while Kim Heedo scoffed.

Obviously, the "supplements" that Go Gunjoon mentioned were drugs.

Kids these days are really scary.

Sohee let out a sigh. "Is that what you meant when you said you caught this sunbae of yours in the act? You saw him selling supplements to the sunbaes in your sports club?"

"Yes, Hyung-nim. The supplements that Byeol Sunbae sold were popular because they were specifically made for Betas," Go Gunjoon continued with his story. "It’s common knowledge that Alphas are naturally stronger than most Betas. That was why most Betas who belonged to a sports club in our school relied on Byeol Sunbae’s supplements. But since selling any kind of product among students is illegal in our school, it became an open secret."

"An open secret?" Sohee asked suspiciously. "No one snitched? It’s obvious that those supplements are dangerous. And, yet, nobody bothered to tell the teachers?"

"Hyung, most Koreans mind their own business, especially if the business they witness is shady," Kim Heedo said in a slightly scolding tone. "You’re one of the few saints among us who would actually care enough to meddle with other people’s business."

Ahem.

Sohee couldn’t refute that, so he just kept his mouth shut.

It’s not wrong to be an empath, but I’ve already been kidnapped twice because I can’t leave people alone, so let’s just stay quiet.

"That hyung-nim wasn’t wrong," Go Gunjoon said, politely pointing at Kim Heedo with both hands. "Nobody is snitching because the Alphas who rule our school don’t care— they are confident that the Betas won’t be able to beat them even with the help of suspicious supplements. Hence, even if there are Betas and Omegas who want to "snitch," they are afraid to be the target of those Alphas’ anger."

Aigoo.

Alphas really rule this society.

"That and because most students were afraid of Byeol Sunbae," Go Gunjoon added. "There are rumors that Byeol Sunbae is involved with real gangsters that even chaebols and politicians can’t touch recklessly."

Real gangsters, huh?

Jung Byeol, the Omega kid who attacked Kim Heedo, entered Sohee’s mind.

The Jung Byeol I remember looks bright and innocent, so I hope it’s not the same Jung Byeol that Go Gunjoon is telling us about.

Sohee crossed his arms over his chest. "So, how did you get involved with that scary sunbae of yours?"

"Byeol Sunbae was kind to me, so I didn’t believe the rumors about him," Go Gunjoon admitted shamelessly. "So, I believed him when he said the supplements he sold were really just supplements that help boost a Beta’s physical strength."

Aigoo.

What a naïve kid.

"Byeol Sunbae sucked at math and keeping records of his sales, so I did his ledger for him. Before I knew it, I already became Byeol Sunbae’s accountant."

"Are you dumb?" Kim Heedo scolded Go Gunjoon bluntly. "You became an accomplice without you knowing."

"I was blinded by Byeol Sunbae’s pretty face."

"Ah, understandable."

Sohee looked at Kim Heedo and Go Gunjoon in disbelief.

Is it just me or that sounded like a conversation between two Alphas even though Go Gunjoon is a Beta?

Oh, well.

Even Betas were capable of being possessive anyway.

"When Byeol Sunbae graduated, the school got quiet for a moment. But only for a few weeks," Go Gunjoon said, starting the new "arc" of his story. "Kang Woong, an Alpha in the same grade as me, started selling the same supplements. He asked me for the ledger that Byeol Sunbae left because he wanted to steal Byeol Sunbae’s old clients."

Sohee raised an eyebrow. "So, did you give the ledger to Kang Woong?"

"I did," Go Gunjoon said while nodding. "I asked Byeol Sunbae, and he said he didn’t mind since he was already done with that business."

"Then what went wrong?"

"Someone found out that the supplements were actually drugs that could turn Betas into Omegas, and that person told the teachers. Unfortunately, the teachers tried to silence them because Kang Woong is the son of Mayor Kang Doosik. So, this person made an announcement on several online platforms about the drugs being distributed in the school. It made a traction, but the post got taken down."

Sohee sighed while shaking his head. "What a brave person. Too bad they were against the son of a politician. Do you know who the whistleblower is?"

"It was me," Go Gunjoon said, pointing at himself. "I overheard Kang Woong saying that he couldn’t wait for the Beta he targeted to become an Omega, so I recorded his conversation with his friends and sent a copy to the teachers."

Wow.

Sohee was speechless.

My brother is a snitch... like me.

"Sohee Hyung, there’s no DNA test needed," Kim Heedo said teasingly while patting Sohee’s shoulder. "That kid is really your brother."

"I know, right?" Sohee agreed with Kim Heedo while sighing and shaking his head. "Go Gunjoon, your house was robbed last night. The thieves were probably looking for the original copy of your recordings, weren’t they?"

"Yes, Hyung-nim. That’s what I thought, too."

"So, where did you hide that recording?"

"I’m sorry, but I don’t trust you that much yet."

"Smart," Sohee praised his half-brother for not easily trusting him. "Anyway, you said you were being framed, right?"

"Yes, Hyung-nim. I’m being framed by Kang Woong and his clique," Go Gunjoon confirmed while nodding. "They used the fact that I have Byeol Sunbae’s ledger to make it look like I was the one selling the drugs. Everyone involved in the case testified that I was the owner of the ledger. They didn’t have the guts to mention Byeol Sunbae’s name, so they used me as an scapegoat. But I think they just wanted to fuck me up because I tattled on them. Too bad the school is on their side."

"Did you try reaching out to Jung Byeol?"

"Byeol Sunbae told me to just take the fall instead of going against Kang Woong," Go Gunjoon said, lowering his gaze. "If I do, Byeol Sunbae promised to take care of me. Sunbae said he’ll find a new school for me, and he’ll pay for everything if I lose my scholarship. Plus, he also promised to help me enter my dream university and pay for my tuition until I graduate."

Is that sunbae a sugar daddy or something?

"What did you say to your sunbae’s proposal?"

"I turned it down, of course."

"Then are you planning to name drop your sunbae during the investigation?"

"I don’t think mentioning Byeol Sunbae’s name will help," Go Gunjoon said, sighing. "It’s obvious that the school has already made the decision to kick me out. The meeting happening this Friday will just be held for formality’s sake."

This kid isn’t wrong.

However...

"But if Kang Woong already got what he wanted by turning the entire school against you, why does he still want to get the recording that you have?" Sohee asked curiously. "Did they talk about something important other than the fact that the supplements were actually drugs?"

Go Gunjoon paused for a moment as if he was racking his brain before answering Sohee’s question. "I think they mentioned the name of their supplier. I can’t remember the name right now, but I believe they said it clearly in the recording."

Ah, so that was why.

Sohee looked up at Kim Heedo.

He didn’t have to say a word to his husband.

Kim Heedo nodded before turning to Go Gunjoon. "I will assign a security detail to keep you and your family safe. Don’t worry, I’ll make sure you won’t notice their presence unless your life is in danger."

"Are you rich, Hyung-nim? Richer and more powerful than Kang Woong’s father?"

"You’ll find out later," Kim Heedo said casually. "Just attend the meeting or whatever this Friday. We’ll be there."

"I have no choice but to trust you," Go Gunjoon said, and then he looked at Sohee. "Hyung-nim, let’s talk about our family after this."

"That’s not up to me, kid," Sohee said, smiling bitterly. "You should ask your mother first if she’d let you get associated with me after this case is solved."

"HOW WAS your college life so far?"

That was the simple question that Sanha asked his younger cousin while they were having chicken and pizza for lunch.

But Jung Byeol casually dropped a bombshell on him.

"So, I lost my mind when I got an intense heat cycle. I ended up attacking the sunbae-nim I liked. Fortunately, Kim Heedo Sunbae-nim and his husband Park Sohee Sunbae-nim were generous people."

Sanha dropped the chicken drumstick in his hand when Jung Byeol casually mentioned the names he didn’t expect to hear at that moment. "Who did you say you attacked while you were in heat?"

"Kim Heedo Sunbae-nim," Jung Byeol said as if he was proud. "He’s a famous sunbae at school, and he’s a Dominant Alpha."

Dammit.

Jung Byeol didn’t know Kim Heedo on a personal level because Jung Byeol wasn’t involved in the ’information trade’ where their organization sold miracle pills to people who could give them valuable information about chaebols.

And Kim Heedo was good at hiding his identity as a chaebol.

Jung Byeol also didn’t know that Kim Heedo is Lee Junsu’s ex-boyfriend since that information was withheld from the public when Lee Junsu debuted.

Moreover, Sanha kept Jung Byeol at arm’s length to protect his identity.

I only allowed this brat to get close to me again after he quit drugs.

"Jung Byeol, you didn’t make a mistake when dealing with those sunbae-nims, did you?"

"I actually did, Hyung."

Sanha’s heart almost dropped to the floor. "What did you do, punk?"

"I made a slip of the tongue and said I was ’turned into’ an Omega instead of saying I manifested as one," Jung Byeol confessed shamelessly as if it wasn’t a big deal when it was. "I didn’t expect Park Sohee Sunbae-nim to catch on that, and he even confronted me about it."

Okay, now Sanha’s heart was beating fast and hard against his chest. "So, what did you tell Park Sohee?"

"I said I just misspoke because I was in a bad condition."

"Did he believe you?"

"I think so. Park Sohee Sunbae-nim cut ties with me after that. He was probably being conscious of me because I attacked his husband," Jung Byeol said, knitting his eyebrows. "But why are you so curious about them, Hyung?"

"Kim Heedo and Park Sohee are the Alpha-Omega pair that we need to avoid at all cost if we want to survive," Sanha said in a serious tone, and then he made a phone call while looking at his younger cousin with a serious look on his face. "Jung Byeol, let’s pretend we don’t know each other in the meantime."

***

HEEDO changed his phone number?

Lee Junsu was pretty shocked after he tried to call Kim Heedo, but the service said the number didn’t exist anymore.

At first, he thought he was just blocked.

But when he borrowed Sangwoo’s phone, he realized that Kim Heedo’s old number wasn’t working anymore.

"Junsu-ya, what do you want for lunch?"

Lee Junsu lifted his head.

Right now, he was in the waiting room of a variety show where he would appear on later. Since it was already lunch time, he sent his other staff members to eat.

Hence, only Lee Junsu and Sangwoo— his manager— were in there at the moment.

"You’re on a diet, right?" Sangwoo asked while using his extra phone to look for a restaurant to order from. "Should I order salad or gimbap—"

"Hyung, find Kim Heedo’s new phone number for me."

Sangwoo lifted his head and raised an eyebrow at him. "What happened to laying low in the meantime, Junsu-ya? Why are you suddenly acting clingy to Kim Heedo?"

"Because Kim Heedo isn’t acting like how he’s supposed to act," Lee Junsu said anxiously, biting his nail. "Kim Heedo should be chasing me again after I reached out to him first."

What did Park Sohee do to control Kim Heedo’s strange actions?
