Chapter 40: TRANSFERABLE LUCK?

SOHEE was actually willing to divorce Kim Heedo if the kid was really determined to get back with his ex-boyfriend.

However, this changed everything.

I’m already used to this comfortable life— I’m not going back to being broke.

"Jung-nim, Kim Heedo and his family promised me alimony if we divorced," Sohee said. This time, he was taking the conversation really seriously. "Doesn’t that mean my future is already secured whether I’m lucky or not? I won’t invest my money— I’ll just keep it safe in the bank. And I live frugally even now. Do you think I’ll still end up bankrupt if I divorce Km Heedo, sir?"

"That’s the thing about bad luck, child— it will find its way to you no matter how careful or prepared you are," Shaman Jung said, smiling sympathetically at him. "The divorce itself won’t bring you misfortune. However, if someone else takes your place, that’s when you’ll gradually lose the luck your grandfather has left for you."

"My place? As in being Kim Heedo’s husband?"

"The Kim Family needs you in their family registry for their prosperity, and the same applies to you."

"Is that why my life was shitty before I married Kim Heedo?"

"You can say that."

Haaah.

Now things had just become complicated.

I’m willing to let go of Kim Heedo since we have a contract that says I’ll receive alimony from him after our divorce. But if I’d still get bankrupt because of the bad luck awaiting me if I lose Kim Heedo, then I might end up clinging to him.

"Jung-nim, have you told the Kim Family about this?"

"No, of course not," Shaman Jung assured him. "I’m on your side, Sohee-ssi."

"Now that sounds suspicious."

The shaman chuckled while shaking his head. "You’re the luckiest person I’ve met in my life, Sohee-ssi."

"Bullshit."

Again, Shaman Jung chuckled. "I know it’s hard to believe because you suffered all your life. But that doesn’t change the fact that you were born with a stroke of great luck. It just happens that you needed a trigger to activate the luck that your family has accumulated through good karma."

"My family accumulated good karma? How? My grandparents are good people. But my father is a horrible person."

"Your father’s stolen luck was considered a "great sacrifice" by the heavens," the shaman explained. "Hence, the wealthier and more powerful the Ilsung Group becomes— thanks to your grandfather’s tear-stricken sacrifice— the more good karma your family receives. But good karma favors good people. Hence, your father wasn’t chosen."

Pfft.

"So, I received the good karma because I’m a good person?" Sohee asked, shaking his head. "I’m not a good person, though. Just now, I thought about clinging to Kim Heedo even though I promised him I would divorce him if he wanted to. I’ve only lived comfortably for a few months, and yet I’m already too scared to go back to my old life."

Shaman Jung smiled as if he was trying to console Sohee. "Kid, don’t sell yourself short. The heavens wouldn’t have chosen you if you were truly a bad person."

Haaah.

To be honest, Sohee only accepted the supernatural part of his marriage with Kim Heedo because it instantly made him rich.

However, he couldn’t trust every word that Shaman Jung was saying.

But it won’t hurt to be careful, right?

"Jung-nim, are you really on my side?"

"As I was saying, you have great luck, Sohee-ssi. And that luck was activated by your marriage with Heedo-ssi," Shaman Jung said. "Since I was the one who made your marriage happen, the heavens rewarded me for my good deed. It seems like the heavens want you and Heedo-ssi to stay married. Hence, I want to be an instrument that keeps the two of you together."

"Because the heavens will give you more rewards if we stay together?"

"I help people prosper because by doing so, I receive more divine power from the god I serve," Shaman Jung explained. "This time, I feel like I’m going to get a bigger heavenly gift. That’s why I’m choosing your side, Sohee-ssi. I never pledged my loyalty to the Kim Family anyway. They’re just one of my many wealthy clients."

"So, even shamans have greed, huh?"

"You have to cut me some slack, Sohee-ssi. I don’t have earthly desires. All I want is to accumulate more divine power."

It seemed like Shaman Jung had more greed than he let on.

But Sohee didn’t want to be involved, so he didn’t ask questions.

"Lend me your earring for a moment, Sohee-ssi," Shaman Jung said. "I’ll purify it with my divine power again."

Ah, yes.

I almost forgot that it was the reason why I met with Jung-nim today.

The culprit tried to take Sohee’s earring, so it somehow tainted the blessing that Shaman Jung put in it.

Oh?

Sohee suddenly thought of something. "Jung-nim, can I ask you a favor? I have a plan."

***

"YOU MET with Jung-nim today, Hyung?"

"I did," Sohee said, sitting down on the sofa. "You brought dinner?"

"It’s a thank-you gift for the hearty breakfast that you prepared for me this morning," Kim Heedo said while setting the table. "I ordered these dishes from a famous traditional restaurant. Hyung likes healthy food, right?"

Pfft.

"Heedo-ya, you’re treating me like an elder."

"Well, Hyung is old."

"Yah. I’m only two years older than you."

"You only say that when it’s convenient to you, Hyung," Kim Heedo complained. "But you don’t hesitate to use your age card when you want to scold me."

"Aigoo. Kids these days are really scary."

"Stop complaining and come here, Hyung. We have braised short ribs here. Hyung liked the braised short ribs that Eomma made for you before, right? This one tastes similar to that."

"Hell yeah," Sohee said, getting up immediately because he liked President Kim Nari’s cooking. His mother-in-law only knew a few dishes, but she could cook all dishes to perfection. "Thank you for the dinner."

"Dig in, Hyung."

Sohee and Kim Heedo then enjoyed their scrumptious dinner.

I wonder why this kid is buttering me up.

Then they had bingsu for dessert, and only then did Kim Heedo finally start talking about the reason he visited Sohee at his apartment.

"Hyung."

"Yeah?"

"My friends and I have talked to Ho Changmin earlier," Kim Heedo said carefully. "He’s the ex-boyfriend of the Alpha who attacked you, and he’s also the first victim of my "stalker." Actually, Ho Changmin was my first hook-up."

Sohee blinked, slightly confused. "So, you’re saying that your "stalker" turned out to be your first hook-up’s ex-boyfriend? And that "stalker" beat this Ho Changmin up? To warn others not to touch you? It doesn’t make sense, dude."

"I know, Hyung."

"It would have been more believable if Ho Changmin turned out to be your stalker. But his ex-boyfriend? That’s confusing."

"Hong Sera has a theory, though. She thinks Lim Jinwook only pretended to be a stalker who’s obsessed with me to isolate me from our peers. It did work. But I only socialize to keep up an appearance, so I really don’t care."

Sohee fell silent for a moment, and then he nodded. "Hong Sera has a point. But we’ll never know the truth unless we hear it straight from Lim Jinwook."

"And that’s why we prepared a trap for him."

"Okay."

"We need your help, Hyung," Kim Heedo said, acting awkward as if he was just getting forced to ask Sohee’s help. "Can you please be our bait?"

Oh.

"Why are you acting nervously? Do you think I’d be scared to act as bait? I won’t turn it down, silly," Sohee grinned while smacking Kim Heedo’s back lightly. "You know I love drama, right? Especially if the drama makes me feel like I’m the main character in a thriller series."

"This is exactly why I didn’t want to ask your help, Hyung."

"Why not?"

"Because I know you’ll enjoy it too much, Hyung," Kim Heedo complained while shaking his head. "What if you find it so fun to play the role of the main character that you risk your life just for some adrenaline?"

"Oh, please," Sohee said nonchalantly, even waving his hand dismissively. "I just enjoy the drama— I’m not an adrenaline junkie."

Those were Sohee’s last infamous words.

***

"HYUNG, this is Ho Changmin. Ho Changmin, this is Park Sohee— my husband."

Oh.

Sohee wasn’t surprised that Kim Heedo introduced him as his husband since they had to keep up appearances.

But he was surprised by how Kim Heedo called him his husband so naturally.

And that got his stupid heart excited for some stupid reason.

"It’s nice to meet you, Sohee-ssi," Ho Changmin said politely. "I’m looking forward to working with you."

"Same here," Sohee said, smiling. "Let’s catch the stalker, Changmin-ssi."

Right now, Sohee and Ho Changmin were in Kim Heedo’s penthouse.

And the plan was to lure Lim Jinwook there.

"Hyung, Ho Changmin, the bodyguards are just next door," Kim Heedo assured them. "You’ll be safe in here."

And those were Kim Heedo’s last infamous words.
