Chapter 39: Dumbledore and the cold beauty

The back gate of the apartment complex opened, and an old man stepped out of the gate. Damon had to rub his eyes and look again because the old man looked as if he had stepped right out of the game world. Or rather, the Harry Potter movie set.

He was kind of like Dumbledore with long white hair and a long white beard, and flowing layered robes that shimmered faintly in the moonlight.

A tall wooden staff topped with a faintly glowing crystal tapped softly against the pavement as he walked. He had an air of unhurried dignity, each step radiating the calm of someone who had seen centuries pass and grown bored of most of them.

Damon blinked again. His instincts told him that this was definitely not a regular old man from the neighborhood. He immediately couldn’t pinpoint it, and it took him a second, but he soon recognized why.

Mana!

This guy in front of him actually had mana gathered in his body!

Impossible! Damon’s eyes went wide. The first thing he did after he turned into a vampire was try and sense mana, but there was absolutely no mana in Earth’s atmosphere. At least not yet. Then how could this old man have mana in his body?

It was not much mana. It was definitely not enough to form a mana core. In fact, the old man seemed not to even know how to handle mana and prevent it from constantly seeping out of his body, and yet there was undeniably mana inside him.

While Damon was still trying to size up the old man, a familiar face appeared beside him. It was that cold beauty from next door. ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com

Her hair was tied back into a neat braid, but her clothes were no longer the casual gym set he remembered. Tonight, she wore a sleek black outfit that hugged her figure like liquid armor, and around her neck, a slender crystal pendant pulsed faintly in rhythm with the old man’s staff.

He could see the family resemblance between the two of them. Fuck! What the hell was going on here? Between her bloodline and this old man’s mana and his status, Damon could see that he had stepped into some real shit here.

The only good news was that none of them seemed to care about him. So maybe he did not have to worry about anything after all?

Right at this moment, the old man suddenly stopped walking and turned to look directly at Damon, or at least the spot Damon was standing a second ago.

Now there was only darkness and shadow in the area, and no one else. The old man continued to look at the spot with a frown on his face before a black Mercedes silently arrived in front of the back gate.

Its polished frame glinted in the streetlights, windows tinted darker than the night sky. The door opened without anyone touching it.

The cold beauty stepped forward and opened the rear passenger door with practiced ease. The old man hesitated for a moment, still staring at the empty patch of sidewalk Damon had vacated a heartbeat earlier. He tilted his head, the frown deepening.

The glowing crystal at the top of his staff flickered. Then dimmed.

The old man climbed into the car, moving slowly, but not because of age—because of calculation. Purpose. Like someone who’d learned patience the hard way, by outliving enemies. And allies. The beauty followed, not before sweeping one last glance at the apartment complex.

And then, with a soft click, the Mercedes pulled away, vanishing into the night like a ghost who never intended to be seen in the first place.

The men gathered around the area also silently vacated, leaving in the next couple of black vans that showed up. Within 5 minutes, the entire area was empty and deserted again.

Meanwhile, Damon silently appeared inside his apartment complex, closing his eyes and sensing everything that happened. His eyes flashed open as the last of the vans left the area, but there was still a frown on his face.

He did not feel relieved at all that they had left. Though it seemed that all this pomp and show was simply for the old man visiting the girl, he couldn’t help but feel there was more to it. The timing of everything was simply too coincidental.

The mana he sensed, the special bloodline of that woman... Damon let out a sigh. Whatever was coming, he would be prepared.

On the brighter side... Damon smiled as he gazed at his shadow. He had discovered something unexpected. He was able to use shadow magic outside of the game!

And he could see why. Mana was still unavailable on Earth, but he still had his blood. Vampires have always been able to use blood energy instead of mana for fueling their skills, and it looked like he was able to do the same outside of the game.

He felt a little weak at the moment. Otherwise, he was perfectly fine after using Shadowstep. When the old man turned to him, he had acted instinctively and activated the skill, thanks to his last hour of grinding with the shadow skills.

Damon thought for a minute about what would have happened if he had not gotten these shadow skills. He then shook it off. There was no point in thinking about what-ifs and whatnots. He needed to focus on the present.

He made himself another cup of coffee and then downed it before putting on his helmet and getting back to the game. He had only 12 hours of gaming hours everyday, and he did not want to waste them unnecessarily.

If he needed power to handle the things that were happening in the real world, he needed to get back into the game and work towards another power-up. He already had a plan in mind, and soon, his power was going to exponentially explode.

Damon steeled his determination as he switched on the gaming helmet. He closed his eyes and opened them again to find himself back in the world of Earth Online.
