Chapter 26: The Foxes are not dead!

Xavier POV

My brows arched in surprise as Noah called out the Fox Leader’s name.

"Do you know him?" I asked, turning to him as he came to stand beside me.

"Yeah, everyone knows Kai." He gave me a side glance before turning to face Kai. "What are you doing here?"

"They killed my daughter and son here," Kai said lazily, as he sought my gaze again. "I’ve come to reclaim their bodies."

"We cannot do that," I said calmly. "As a punishment for the damage your daughter and son caused to the pack, we’ll bury them here." So, we cannot give you their bodies,".

Kai chuckled as he crossed his legs, fixing his gaze on me. "I didn’t come here to spend half the whole day talking about whether you want to release the bodies. I am telling you to give me the bodies of my children so I can bury them in peace,".

"Don’t cross the line, Kai," Noah warned, stepping in front of me. "Are you trying to threaten an Alpha?"

"Back when his wife was still alive, I would have thought twice about putting on these rude airs, but everyone knows that you’re nothing but a living corpse without your fated mate, Xavier Steele,".

"Watch what you say," Theo growled in annoyance, unsheathing his sword.

"I won’t," Kai continued with a shrug "You have no idea what is coming to you right?" he chuckled "Well, let me tell you..." he snapped his finger at one of the persons that had come with him and immediately, he produced a bottle of water.

I watched in irritation as he broke the seal, and in one gulp downed the content.

"Ah! I feel so refreshed," he sighed, smacking his lips "To cut the long story short, Alpha Xavier, you’re going to be attacked soon by Alpha Kurtis. I heard one of his rogues—most favourite rogue of his died here,".

"He was a spy and they do not always have happy endings," I responded coldly.

"Right?" he chuckled again. "But still you wouldn’t have killed him. I don’t know if it’s just me, but your pack seems to be turning into a burial ground. A lot of people come here and lose their lives. Do you care to explain what might be the problem?"

"We do not owe you an explanation, Kai," Noah said. "The bodies will be buried in this pack. You best deal with it,".

Alpha Kurtis was a rogue Alpha, and one of the most feared in the region. The reason; was the ruthless way he dealt with people during any fight. Unlike most Alphas who keep women and children alive, Kurtis had zero care for that and would not rest until every life in that pack died.

He didn’t care about laws and believed that power should belong to the strongest at all times. Warning off a Pack was his method of attacking. If they are lucky, it takes three days after the warning before he strikes at most seven days.

After Kai left with his entourage, Noah turned to me,

"How long has all this been going on? Why didn’t you say something?" he asked

"It’s fine, everything is under control,".

"Everything is under control?" he scoffed. "Your pack is at risk of danger and you think everything should be as it is? What preparations and plans are you making at least in preparation?".

"Listen to me, Alpha Noah," I said with a sigh "Everything is under control. Thank you for asking but I think I can deal with things like this. If you’ll excuse me, I’ve got a lot of things to attend to,".

I gave him a curt bow before leaving the room, Lucius and Theo hot on my trails.

When we got to my office, I sat heavily on the couch supporting my head with both hands, if there was an attack, we would lose. Since Selene’s death, our workforce has diminished.

Somehow, her aura and the monthly recharge I got from her every full moon, made me two times stronger than the average Alpha and our soldiers were the best in the entire region. But the extended famine, sickness and hardship had reduced our manpower by half.

"We could ask the Lycan King for assistance," Theo said suddenly. "At least, if we can get 100 Lycans, that’s like 200 Alpha’s fighting then we can make it up with the rest of our good soldiers,".

"The world doesn’t work like that, Theo," Lucius said quietly. "Why don’t you go gather up what’s left of our soldiers and train. Let’s make do with what we have for the meantime,".

Theo nodded and gave a bow to both me and Lucius before exiting.

This was unlike Lucius who would have been reaching out to several of our ally packs to request for soldiers. Why was he acting like everything was fine?

"Is everything alright?" I asked and watched as he sat on the seat opposite me.

"Yes," he nodded. "I want to know how much of everything you’ve gotten back?"

"Everything I’ve gotten back?" I stared at him strangely. "I don’t understand,".

"Like your smell and your wolf," his eyes were watching me intensely as he spoke.

"Just my smell and the ability to talk, of course. And a few nights ago, I felt Colton stir within me. You saw it that other night. I couldn’t change into my wolf form,".

"How about the memories?" he asked again.

"Nothing yet," I replied, "But the nightmare has stopped. For almost a week now, I’ve not had them,".

"Okay," he nodded. "I’m about to tell you something now, Alpha, but you must promise me that you won’t be alarmed," he said quietly.

"O – Okay..." I drawled "Is it a secret or something surprising?" I probed.

"Something like that," he said, "But first, promise me that you won’t be alarmed."

I searched his face looking for clues while wondering what he wanted to tell me. If this was about the numerous killings and even the death of the Foxes, I didn’t need to be told that he was behind their deaths.

I knew Lucius has been trying to protect me for the longest of times. He had put his life on hold just to make sure my birthright doesn’t get stolen from me and I appreciate him more than anything.

"Look, if this is about the deaths and...".

"It isn’t," he interrupted me" Just promise me, Xavier and I’ll tell you,".

"Fine," I exhaled "I promise,".

"The foxes..." he paused as his eyes scanned my face "Are not dead,".
