Chapter 312: Best thing

"My name’s Elise. Please tell me if there are any slots opened!"

"Sure."

Alicia let out an awkward laugh as she watched the young lady, who seemed to be a freshman or a year older than that. But with such enthusiasm, she believed Elise was a freshman.

"What a refreshing sight," she mumbled and sighed, glancing at the piece of paper where Elise had written her number. She picked it up on instinct and slipped it inside her notes.

Even Alicia didn’t know why she even bothered taking the piece of paper. She was already tutoring Shanaiah and with Shainaiah’s temper, Alicia was afraid there was no room for her to accept other students. Moreover, Shanaiah was paying her five times her actual rate, and she even told her one of her friends wanted to join the tutoring session.

As she kept the note, her eyes then fell on the ad Elise left on her table.

"Who made this ad?" she mumbled and picked up the poster, reading the details carefully. "Is this a prank?"

Her name, her number, and even her picture were on it. If this was a prank, it was not a good prank. Alicia never put up any ads. If anything, she applies to students or anyone looking for a cheap tutor online. However, she didn’t feel she had to worry about it because it was simply an ad. If anything, it gave her an idea for the future.

"I should make something like this one once I made sure Shanaiah would be able to graduate," she mumbled, now reminded of her student, who still had not yet arrived. "What’s taking her so long? Don’t tell me she canceled?"

It had been a while now since their planned meeting. Hence, Alicia was now growing worried.

Taking her bag, she rummaged through it to look for her phone. When she didn’t find it the first time, she didn’t feel any worry because she might’ve missed it. But when she still couldn’t find her phone, she started taking out everything from her bag.

"My phone’s not here," she panicked.

Alicia checked every pocket — big or small — even her textbooks in hopes somehow, someway, her phone slipped in between the pages. It was ridiculous, but she had a hopeful heart. Sadly, no matter how much she tossed and turned everything, her phone was nowhere in sight.

"Oh, my god," she gasped in disbelief, now racking her brain on where she could’ve left her phone. It should just be in here. Alicia often kept her bag safe — her phone, especially.

How could it go missing?

"Did I leave it somewhere?" she wondered, thinking when was the last time she used her phone. "No, no. I didn’t leave it home."

She was just using it before meeting with Shanaiah. Alicia hasn’t gone anywhere else since then aside from this cafe. While waiting for Shanaiah, she was just doing some reading and some final preparation before the tutoring session.

"I didn’t get up here..." she whispered and then remembered going into the restroom one time. "Did I leave it there?"

Without thinking twice, Alicia hurriedly ran to the cafe’s restroom to check if she left her phone in there. It wasn’t on the sink, so she quickly went to the cubicle she used.

"Oh!" Alicia heaved a sigh when she saw an old phone just lying on top of the toilet. She held it close to her chest as she heaved another sigh of relief.

"Goodness. I thought I lost it," she muttered and gazed down at her phone again. A wry smile turned up on her face, huffing one last time before her heart calmed. "Good thing it’s an old phone. So, no one probably took an interest in it."

Alicia was just glad that she still found her phone. After all, she didn’t have that extra money to buy a new one. She didn’t even have money to buy extra and it would be a waste. Most importantly, her brother would give her a call every day to check up on her... and also to nag her.

Alicia marched outside the cubicle while checking her phone. "Hmm?"

Her steps halted when she noticed a text from Shanaiah. It says;

[From: Shanaiah

You’re fired.]

Alicia froze in place with her eyes fixated on the screen. "Huh?" she read the very short message ten more times just to make sure she wasn’t seeing things. But the message was clear.

"Why?"

Confused, Alicia intuitively gave Shanaiah a call. Although Shanaiah had a bad temper, Alicia was enduring it because of the pay. It wasn’t like Shanaiah had hurt her that much. Hence, if it was verbal assault and a bit of intimidation, Alicia could take it.

The call rang a few times before it was dropped. Alicia had to try three more times before Shanaiah picked it up.

"Shanaiah, what’s going on? Why are you firing me?" Alicia inquired as soon as the line connected.

Shanaiah didn’t answer immediately, but when she did, her voice sounded groggy. "Huh?"

"Sha — Shanaiah, did you forget our session for today?" Alicia bit her lips, knowing Shanaiah was probably high somewhere. She moved closer to the corner and spoke very quietly. "Shanaiah, you said you need to graduate. If you really want to, then you should stop getting high and partying for now until you pass your exams."

"Shut up, will you?" Shanaiah grumbled irritably but languidly. "I fired you because you didn’t come, you shameless fool. My friend knows a better teacher who is more experienced than you. What would we learn from you when you can’t even do something so simple as showing up in time?"

"What?" Deep lines resurfaced in between her brows. "What do you mean I didn’t show up in time? I’ve been waiting —"

"Tch. Pathetic." Shanaiah didn’t listen to the rest of Alicia’s sentiments and hung up.

Still confused, Alicia tried to call the number but alas, she was blocked.

"She blocked me?" Alicia gasped in dismay, looking at her phone in disbelief.

She had been waiting for her and even finished their lesson plan for the next three sessions. However, Shanaiah simply fired her without any reason. Or rather, she was fired by a blatant lie.

Alicia still stubbornly called Shanaiah but to no avail.

"Ah, god." Alicia leaned her back on the wall, cocked her head back, and closed her eyes. She raised her hands and rested the bottom of her palms on her forehead.

"What am I going to do now?"

Alicia’s plan to leave her part-time jobs once she was able to save up was gone. She might not be able to find someone who would pay her well for her tutoring services. It stressed her for a moment, but she knew there was nothing she could do.

After gathering her thoughts and managing her emotions, Alicia faced the mirror. She smiled subtly and bitterly before shaking her head.

"It’s okay!" she told herself and forced a smile. "It’s not like I starved before this tutoring."

It was still a good thing Alicia didn’t let go of her part-times immediately. If not, then she would be in a much bigger trouble. After filling herself with optimism, Alicia walked out of the restroom to gather her things and prepare herself for her part-time job.

When she reached her table and fixed her things, her eyes fell on the piece of paper that had Elise’s number on it. Recalling the enthusiastic young lady, she smiled subtly.

’She might not pay just as much as Shanaiah, but I do feel bad for turning her down.’ There was this bit of shame in her heart, but she still called the number. "Hello there, Elise. It’s me, Alicia. Uhm... my student suddenly pulled out of my tutoring services. If you’re still interested, then we can probably talk about it."

After turning down Elise not so long ago, Alicia wouldn’t be surprised if Elise rejected her now. This made her sound like she simply rejected Elise for no reason earlier. Much to her surprise, Elise’s voice was different than what she expected.

"Really?!" Elise’s voice was excited. "Really? There’s now a slot so quick?"

"Ha ha... I know, right?"

"I’m probably lucky! Hehe! Wait! Are you still in the cafe?"

"Yes."

"Wait. I’ll go back there now!" After saying that, Elise hung up on her.

Alicia could only stare at her phone for a moment before she smiled. She thought Elise would assume the worst, but it seemed Alicia judged too quickly.

’Shanaiah’s thinking somehow rubbed off of me,’ she thought before cleaning the mess on the table.

Only three minutes later, Elise came back excitedly. She quickly sat down across from Alicia, making Alicia smile widely.

"I’m sorry about earlier, and I know this is abrupt, but thank you for coming back," Alicia expressed from the bottom of her heart, only to see Elise wave.

"It’s okay! I’m just glad I was able to find a tutor only a few older than me. I wasn’t joking when I said I’m scared of older tutors. They make me sleepy!"

Alicia chuckled. "Well, I hope I can make this fun for the both of us."

"Mhm!" ƒree𝑤ebnσvel.com

"Anyway, let’s talk about our schedule and the rates..."

As they discussed the important details, Alicia was unaware that getting fired from Shanaiah was the best thing that could’ve happened to her.
