Chapter 700: Chapter 693: Wailing

The monster’s roar and the Serpent People’s resistance were nothing new; they were just as helpless as humans when besieged by zombies and monsters, overwhelmed by the sheer number of creatures.

The performance of the Serpent People wasn’t bad because they were not only robust but also exhibited an extremely strong ability in close combat.

"What are they using?"

Gao Yuan was very interested in the weapons used by the Serpent People because he might face the same situation in the upcoming battles, so he wanted to figure out exactly what these weapons were.

Xinghe focused her gaze for a moment, then said in a low voice, "Those aren’t weapons; they are cutting and welding tools used in emergency situations."

"Tools?"

"Yes."

Gao Yuan asked in confusion, "Why is this happening? Why don’t the Serpent People have weapons to subdue the monsters?"

"You need to understand one thing, the Serpent People aren’t without weapons, nor do they lack the capability to fight; it’s that their weapons are unusable."

Since he was just watching the Serpent People being slaughtered, Gao Yuan really didn’t mind clearing up the situation a bit more.

"Why?"

Xinghe pointed to the extremely massive engine in the middle of the mothership and said, "This is the engine used by the mothership; you can see how big it is."

"Yes."

"This engine is like the controlled nuclear fusion reactors you’re familiar with; it generates energy that is then transmitted through microwave signals. The smaller spacecraft receive the signals, so only within a certain range around the mothership can these small spacecraft operate. But when the power of the mothership vanishes, all the weapons systems, along with the subsidiary ships, lose their function. And why is that? The reason is simple."

Xinghe paused briefly, then continued, "Because a mothership is a single spacecraft in its own right; the other ships are merely accessories. If the mothership’s power source is damaged, then there’s no need, nor possibility, for its accessories to operate independently, understand?"

"I don’t understand, why isn’t there a need to operate independently?"

"Because the universe is much larger than you imagine, and Earth is actually quite small. You think those spacecraft are large because you’re accustomed to judging the size of a flying object by the standards of Earth. But to a spacefaring civilization, especially one like the Serpent People who dispatch exploration and scientific investigation teams for the purpose of stellar colonization, their motherships cannot be smaller."

Gao Yuan thought a Boeing 747 was a very large airplane, but compared to the Serpent People’s spacecraft, well, that was the difference between an atmospheric craft and one that travels between star systems.

Xinghe pointed to Luo Xingyu’s mecha and said, "You have controlled nuclear fusion, but would you install a fusion reactor on every mecha? No, because there’s no need. As long as efficient energy transmission is achieved, there’s no need for mechas to have independent fusion reactors. The Serpent People are the same; the mothership provides all the energy that’s needed, so why would those small spacecraft require their own power sources?"

Alright, it was still a question of perspective. Gao Yuan thought it was strange for the Serpent People’s great ship to lack an independent power source, but if he considered the small Serpent People’s spacecraft as mechas, then it was easy to understand.

What humans consider large might just be insignificant in the eyes of the Serpent People.

As he moved toward the core area from inside the mothership, Gao Yuan saw no fewer than a hundred ships, triangular ones and cigar-shaped ones, all stationed within the mothership. For the Serpent People’s Mothership, these ships were essentially drones.

Xinghe let out a sigh and said, "The Ark destroyed the power source of the Serpent People’s Mothership right at the root, so this mothership lost power and was unable to recover. However, the process wasn’t instantaneous; the Ark had to ensure the mothership descended slowly rather than plummeting to the ground. It’s an extremely precise control that only the Ark could achieve, and I can’t even begin to imagine how they did it."

Gao Yuan nodded, still wanting to ask more, but he felt like he was overlooking a critical issue.

Luo Xingyu was more sensitive to scientific matters than Gao Yuan.

"Wait a minute," said Luo Xingyu. "You said that most of the functions here require the core engine to supply energy. The Serpent People’s weapons and ships can’t be used because the engine has failed. So, what if another intact mothership provided power to the ships and weapons on this mothership?"

Xinghe replied without hesitation, "It can’t restore all the functions, but the unmanned ships could be used, and some weapons can be restored."

Gao Yuan realized what felt wrong.

The Serpent People’s Mothership was destroyed, and all the small ships were also out of commission. However, there were two Serpent People’s Motherships!

The reason those small ships didn’t need their own power source was because having two motherships together meant a fail-safe.

"Not good, we have to hurry up!"

Gao Yuan pointed toward the gathering spot of the Serpent People and said gravely, "Attack the Serpent People! Take out all the Serpent People here first!"

Without any hesitation, Luo Xingyu aimed her shoulder-mounted electromagnetic cannon at the location where the Serpent People were clustered, while Xinghe spoke in a low voice, "Are you worried that power supplied by another mothership will reactivate the weapons system and unmanned ships here?"

"Yes!"

Gao Yuan immediately confirmed Xinghe’s guess and then said to Luo Xingyu, "Don’t worry about the monsters, take out the Serpent People first!"

Luo Xingyu immediately opened fire, and beside her, the Taihang No. 2 followed suit.

As soon as they fired, they were exposed, and almost all the monsters immediately raised their heads to look in the direction of Gao Yuan and the others.

Gao Yuan clenched his teeth and said, "Focus fire, sweep them! Ignore the monsters!"

The electromagnetic guns opened fire, and the electromagnetic cannons continued firing. The situation Gao Yuan feared did not materialize, and the Serpent People were struck down one after another. The defense line that had up until now held steady was almost instantly breached, and the monsters, which could only chip away at the Serpent People’s defense ring layer by layer, nearly broke into the defensive perimeter in an instant.

Despair, panic, and incomprehensible cries echoed, but they weren’t too different from the screams of human beings when facing death.

The Serpent People were wailing, but more monsters were also starting to pounce toward Gao Yuan and his companions.

It was at this moment that the giant beast which had been controlling the monsters with its roars turned its head to look at Gao Yuan.

Gao Yuan felt as if his eyes were locked with those of the giant beast.

Locking eyes was an act that only two intelligent beings could accomplish.

The two Mechas continued to shoot at high speed, and Gao Yuan, who should have been considering how to deal with the onslaught of monsters, did not move. He was still locking eyes with the beast.

In the darkness, Gao Yuan, with a night vision device in hand, locked eyes with a giant beast—an impossible condition for eye contact, but he truly believed that the beast was looking at him with a scrutinizing gaze.

Then, the giant beast roared again. The massive sound made Gao Yuan’s ears hurt, but after that bellow, the monsters that had been charging slowed down, then gradually returned to their former positions, continuing to anxiously fixate on the remaining Serpent People.

This made Gao Yuan think that the giant beast was intelligent.
